I believe that Bullet (or Bullit) and The French Connection were credited as 2 of the first films to have car chases.

I've just revisited Mad Max 1/2/3 and some of the chases in there are outstanding. Mad Max 2 in particular has a final chase sequence that must had lasted 15 minutes! It was also pre-CGI which I prefer because it's raw footage. It's the reason why I prefer the older Bond films as well to most of the newer ones. Mad Max 3 is more laid back but it still has a good long sequence at the end involving a train locomotive being chased by cars.

Mad Max 4, which I haven't watched yet, came out in the modern Fast & Furious era, so will have some CGI, but I'm told that it holds up well against Mad Max in general and that it is most similar to Mad Max 2 out of the originals. I will probably watch it this week as I recently got given the blu-ray.

Mad Max 5 is supposed to be coming out this year.

What are your favourite car chases in films? Feel free to add other vehicles as well, as the tank chase in Golden Eye was epic :D

You've named two of the greatest, Bullitt and The French Connection.

The Bourne Identity films (Matt Damon), all have quality car chases. Quantum of Solace has a great opening sequence.

I kind of didn't have anything jump out at me when I read the title, but as soon as I saw that picture, I remembered the Fury Road bike scene. Literally one of the best action scenes period, let alone best within the car chase category. The music is amazing.

Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) has got a really good car chase the amount of practical effects and filming really stands out. More an honourable mention because it's maybe not the best car chase but rather a great piece of filmography of a car chase.

Thanks for the ideas everyone - keep 'em coming :-) I will do Mad Max 4 (Fury Road) next as I only got that recently and there have been mentions of it here then will look at some of the others like Ronin, Blues Brothers and onwards. The Italian Job is a good shout too. I have seen it before but do need to see it again, both the 1960s and early 2000s versions.

Vanishing Point (1971).
Yep, this, first thing that came to mind. Of it's time but very good.

Most bond films have had a decenct car chase, Fast n Furious franchise from good to ridiculous, the original French version of Taxi (1998), The Transporter, Who Am I (Jackie Chan), the original Herbie films were good fun too.
