You're forgetting his even better cover of Lucy in the sky with Diamonds!
No way dude. The LSD cover, whilst not intentionally created as a joke, became one - sullying the name of the hero that is Bill Shatner. Has Been is an awesome record, seemingly created as a bit of a joke, playing on the caricature of Shatner, but ended up, like The Transformed Man, having the opposite effect and actually turning out some brilliant songs.

Shed 7 did an awesome cover of Cliff Richard's 'Wired For Sound', a song which up until then I thought was uber-camp and trite. They turned it into a rock anthem.

Best ever though, I'd have to say The Beatles - Twist and Shout. Just electric. I seem to remember reading that they recorded it a number of times in one session but that George Martin picked the very last recording of the night where Lennon's voice was all but burnt out, because that was the one where he gave it everything he had.

Cowboy Song (Thin Lizzy) - covered by the Supersuckers

or

Gimme Shelter - covered by The Hellacopters

Apart from that practically anything by Me First And The Gimme Gimmes!

At the Drive-In - Vaya

Just looks so damn cool!

EDIT: Whoops.

Hendrix - All along the watchtower.

If you can make the cover so good the guy who made the original plays it your way, you know you've done something right!

Wonderwall - Ryan Adams, gives it a completely different feel, going from the imo childish vocals in the original and really capturing the melancholy that the song deserves

Couldn't disagree more. Imo one of the worst covers ever. Totally ruined the flow of the original.

I'd go with:

GNR - Live n Let Die
Faith No More - War Pigs
Ugly Kid Joe - Cats in the cradle
Mr Big - Wide World
Tori Amos - Smells like Teen Spirit
Nuno Bettencourt - Surrender

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah (Leonard 'God of all that is miserable' Cohen)
Ultraviolence - Paranoid (Black Sabbath) Any cover version which results in the artist receiving death threats from fans of the original gets two thumbs up from me...
The Dillinger Escape Plan feat. Mike Patton - Like I Love You (Justin Timberlake)
Primus - In The Flesh (Pink Floyd)
Apoptygma Berzerk - Enjoy The Silence (Depeche Mode)

Whee - found my copy of Johnny Violent's lyricsheet for it:

I'd have to plump for Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U. Just such a fantastic reworking of the song, far better than the original I think.

Prince worte the song specifically for o'connor. So technically that's the original :)

Still waaaaay better than him and rosie gaines(?) attempt :)

Ataris - The Boys of Summer.

Best song evah

Beaten to it :(

I'd vote for Big D & The Kids Table - Little Bitch (The Specials)

My vote goes to The Arctic Monkeys - Love Machine (Girls Aloud)

**** funny :D

I kept hearing about this when they got big, it seemed everyone wanted them to play it live all the time? I listened to it when the MP3 was posted up here and my god it's terrible! Can't see the attraction to that at all!

Best cover version is Gun with its version of cameo's "Word Up"

i was actually going to say this - its a bit cheesy and gun are hardly the best band in the world (or even my house :p ) but this cover never fails to make me happy.

lady madonna - kingmaker - was really good but then i heard it before the original.

feeling good - muse - was good
hard to handle - the black crowes - better than the original imo

somebody alredady said: Ugly Kid Joe - Cats in the cradle

i don't think i can think of any more at the moment, but i must have loads i don't even know are covers.
