Well the gale mini monitors have been around a long time
and give a sound which beggers belief for their size they have
incredible rich meaty bass and clear forward sounding mid and top end
matched with an a1 amp i defy anything to beat that sound at that price of around £120.I purchased my gales about 6 years ago along with some
£200 mission speakers and the gales sound better at almost 1/4 the price
what you are getting with these gale mini monitors is £300 + sound for
a fraction of the price. And they fit perfectly aside a monitor and are magnectically shielded.

The perennially popular Mini Monitors are the companys entry-level speakers. But dont think Gale has cut corners. Where else will you find Gold-plated binding posts on such a design? These stylish, small boxes are virtually invisible in a listening room, yet produce a massive sound which belies their compact cabinet size. This comes thanks to 13cm paper pulp mid/bass drivers with over-sized ceramic magnets, allied to 10mm polymide tweeters. Now in MkII guise, the Mini Monitors have undergone a recent revamp, meaning they should remain class leaders for many years to come.

Easy - audiolab 8000a can be picked up for around £100 or a sonic impact super t-amp could be picked up for about the same. Both would mock that setup.

Please don't say you're using onboard sound though?

Erm for £120 total price the audiolab is £400 silly.
I should have said best budget setup because i doubt you'll find a better sound for £100-£120 total.Of course arcam beats it but i am talking about budget here.
Feel free to show me something better £120 max price.

The audiolab can be bought second hand for around the £100 mark. If you went up a bit you could get a second hand arcam alpha 8 for around £150.

EDIT: also, as I said, the sonic super t-amp would still slaughter it.

Ah, I thought you meant you spent £120 on the A1 alone and thus the mention of ~£120 amps from me.

What soundcard are you using? E-mu 0404 here (digital out (ran into a DAC)).

I bettered that setup for less for my dads birthday present :)

Arcam Alpha 8 amp - £78 off fleebay

Mission 751 speakers (which distroy the gales when atatched to a good amp) - gave these to my dad, they were my old speakers, but iv seen them change hands on ebay for under £40 which is silly money.

Sounds fanatastic for the money, he is chuffed to bits

Nice amp, I got the A3i myself... What speakers are those?

Also, are you tempted to get some subbery for the low-end?

EDIT: Just noticed, gale mini monitors. They look good.

You should definately get a sub tho, with gales doing 63 Hz - 20000 Hz you will definitely notice an improvement, especially with good quality crossovers. :)

that indeed i did, it did have quite a few scratches on the top hences the cheap price, nothing a sand down and repaint didnt sort :)

I was going to mention the Sonic t amp, but someone already has.

Surely a Sonic T with some decent 2nd hand speakers would beat that setup?

Not going to be too great if you like drum and bass though are they.
Why not? they have great bass "have you even ever heard these speakers?"and every post so far is a bit silly
you can get better secondhand wow why would anyone buy an arcam
from fleabay must be on it's way out to even be on there i'd rather pay £120 for this brand new than trust some fleabayer.

jees we aint slaggin your purchase, its a nice litttle setup for the PC, it just isnt going to revelotionise the way humans listen to music thats all.

You cant come on shouting from the hills you have the best thing since sliced bread and expect not to be told it isnt. sorry !

oh and ebay is an excellent place for Hi-fi, decent quality hi-fi is normally very well looked after, and things like amps have very few things that can go wrong. I always look for my hi fii stuff there first, and have picked up some great buys with never a single duff or faulty purchase.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with buying hi-fi from ebay - as someone already said hi-fi gear tends to be very well looked after. I'm a member of hifiwigwam and on there people who are so very picky about there hifi often talk about whatever amp they've just bought off the 'bay and how great it is. A couple of nights ago an exposure 23 and 28 went for ~ £1000 and I know they were in great shape....

At the moment I can honestly say I wouldn't buy any hifi stuff new unless it was ex-demo or I was struggling to find it elsewhere.
