Im having probs removing spyware and viruses off someones pc. basically when you click on links in ie, it takes you to diff places and not the actual link.

Ive tried malware but when you click scan it just exits and deletes the exe file.

Tried search & distroy, but that wont install.

So now Im using spyware doctor and that seems to be working and it has removed loads, but still I cant get malware to scan??

Ive tried all progs in safemode aswell

try this

disable system restore
remove your 'av'
run ccleaner slim http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim
run nod32 trial http://www.eset.com/download/free_trial_download_int.php
run mbam http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam-download.php
run spybot http://fileforum.betanews.com/download/Spybot-Search-Destroy/1043809773/1

still screwed?
run combofix http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

following this, stop going to bad sites etc

use firefox http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/firefox/
install this addon for firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865

when firefox opens following the restart, tick the 'Easylist' subscription

try it all from safemode

Try what bledd suggested and then if it still isn't working consider a reinstall because you could be there for days and days otherwise.

sorted, Combofix broke the barrier, and removed the virus that was stopping malwarebytes scanning. So then I ran malwarebytes and nod32 and that removed a few more infections. I then tried internet explorer and all seems to be working once more.

But this is about the 3rd time Ive cleaned viruses/spyware from this pc in 4 yrs, so should I suggest to the owner, a full format and reinstall in the not for distance future??

Edit Oh yeah, I ran ccleaner on the pc aswel.

Tell them to stop surfing porn, opening attachments and generally being unsafe when connected...

I do hope that's supposed to be sarcastic.

Either make them buy Nod32, or put Microsoft Security Essentials on there

Do they have a router? if not, get one..

And yeah, AVG is pants
