What would you say are the best single player RPG games?

for me so far:

1: TES: Oblivion
2: TES: Morrowind
3: NWN1

THere the only 3 ive played, so what have i yet to try?

so youve played 3 rpgs? and you want to start a "best rpg" thread? ok nm...

but to some hardcore RPG crowd those 3 are barely sp rpgs at all...

best single player rpg of recent times is Vampires: Bloodlines

(there comes a point where we cant keep harking back to the old skool greats like BG2, Planescape Torment etc they are great yeah but time to move on aye?)

yes ive only really played 3 single player RPGS mostly play FPS's and RTS's, ive played plently of mmorpgs though, eve, guild wars etc.

Fallout 1 / 2 (dont go beyond that though tatics was terrible)
Deus Ex 1
Planescape Torment
System Shock 2

Thats the best I can think of right now maybe some Baulders Gate, but thats terribly typical.

Does that just apply to computer games or other forms of entertainment/art?

I thought Zelda 2 was the only Zelda RPG. Anyway I noticed a few of you said Baldur's Gate 2 I think I must be the only one that preferred Baldur's Gate over Baldur's Gate 2.

Picking my all time fav is so hard. At this time I'd have to say Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword coast. It had a great story but you also had more freedom to explore than you got in Baldur's Gate 2.

I guess as soon as an RPG comes out that's better than them old classics I will move on. :)

Baldur's Gate 2. I've had it since it came out...never played past the first dungeon, until a few months ago, then I spent about 100 hours playing the sidequests until I grew tired of it. I plan on restarting again. I'm one of those gamers who quits a game, then plays it again a while later. I'm the same way with books.

Also isn't this supposed to be PC RPGs since we're in the PC games section? I agree though that FF7 and the Zelda games rocked my world.

Not only is Zelda not a PC game it isn't an RPG either. So why do so many people add this action adventure game as a top RPG. It's a good game but a good action adventure game.

Baldurs Gate 1, and the rest of the series without a doubt. Far superior to every other RPG i've played in the last 15 years or so.

I would recommend getting Baldur's Gate and playing it under TuTu (let's you play using the BG2 engine) as well as using a few other mods. You can take your character through to the second game. A lot of people prefer the first game.

In a very rough order from best to worst (very rough lol)

Planescape Torment
Baldurs Gate 1 and 2
KotOR 1 and 2
FF7 (not played any others)
Fable
Morrowind
System Shock 2 (not played 1)
Pokemon on GBC :p
Oblivion
Icewind Dale
Deus Ex (kinda)
Arcanum

KOTOR possibly beats BG but i havent finished bg2 so ill have to reserve judgement.

KOTOR or Arcanum to me are the best party based rpgs that i've played so far (ive played a lot of em). (completely different experience to 1st person based rpgs e.g. Gothic 3 and the like) Planescape possibly had the best story. But the one problem i have with BG, IW2, PT and the like is the game engine and loading screens. Basically splitting everything into a series of screens harmed the atmoshere for me.

Vampire: Bloodlines for me is the best Real 1st person RPG out there. So many choices, playing as different classes and race actually made a difference, like a different game each time, and an excellent funny storyline (varied different endings). Rich, memorable characters (e.g. Jack)

Pool of Radience, Curse of the Azure Bonds, Secret of the Silver Blades, Pools of Darkness (very old though). Take your party from level 1 to past level 40 through the period of the 4 games (AD&D).

dont forget Champions of krynn, Death knights of krynn, Dark queen of krynn. Classics!!

and for scifi

Buck Rogers series

Countdown to Doomsday and Matrix Cubed :D
