i'm in the market for a nice lens for my EOS, and i've decided that Zooms are overrated. i usually set the lens to 30mm (ish) of 50mm (ish) and frame the photo with my legs. i used to use a manual with a 50mm prime, and its just how i work best i guess.

anyway, which of these lenses has the best image quality and build quality:

anyway, i'm open to suggestions for other lenses, but the large aperture is important to me.

I'd go for the 30mm then, unless you like to get really up close and personal :p
surely i'd have to get closer with the 30mm than with the 50mm?

50mm x 1.6 = 80mm

;)

but in a comparative view, could we say that these two lenses are roughly equal in image and build quality?

You need both really. Consider the Canon 50mm f1.8 and the Sigma 30mm f1.4 as a good team.
you're not helping ;) :)

i can't afford both, and the canon 50mm 1,8 looks REALLY shabby, build quality wise.

i was in Trafalgar Squar this afternoon, so i gave a popular high-street photographic supplies store a little visit, and played around with the Sigma.

in an unrelated incident, i've decided that the Sigma is the lens for me. ;)
