Thought I would let you guys know about next week's episode since I know how much you love talking about religion :)

The topic is "Is the Bible still relevant?". It's going to have Richard Dawkins on it and the woman from that recent series, The Bible's Buried Secrets (Dr Francesca Stavrakopoulou).

"To commemorate the 400th anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible, the programme debates just one topic: is the Bible still relevant? Contributing their views from the panel are the Right Reverend Michael Nazir Ali, the former Bishop of Rochester; the scientist and atheist campaigner, Professor Richard Dawkins; Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner from the North Western Reform Synagogue; and the bible scholar Dr Francesca Stavrakopoulou, who presented the BBC Two series, The Bible's Buried Secrets."

It's on next Sunday at 10am.

also, might take a look at that program simply to see what they do find is relevant in this ancient fictional book

The Bible is still relevant to those who are practising Christians. I don't see much for debate on that point really.

Dr Stavrakopoulou is an atheist Biblical Scholar who really knows her stuff, Rabbi Laura Janner-Klausner studied Christian theology at Cambridge, Michael Nazir Ali has several Doctorates in theology and related subjects.

What is Richard Dawkins doing there, he might be an expert in evolutionary biology and renowned ethologist, but he knows very little about religions and Christianity in particular. Seems an odd choice to discuss Christianity, especially as an atheist viewpoint is already represented by a far better qualified person in Dr Stavrakopoulou.

As a moral compass, i feel that the Bible is still largely relevant to many situations. It does, however, show its age in some aspects (abstinence etc). It's still a compendium of wisdom in my view.

The Bible's Buried Secrets (Dr Francesca Stavrakopoulou)

I watched that and didn't agree with any of it, it took pretty much every Bible verse completely out of context.

I highly doubt that this programme is going to be balanced discussion.
I'll be at Church at that time anyway

In fact it took a very objective position on the Bible and Dr Stavrakopoulou is very informed on theology and Christianity in particular, although the programme took an archaeological and historical critical perspective rather than a theological one.

Whether you agree with it or not is a personal opinion, and while Dr Stavrakopoulou is an atheist, she is also objective in regard to her chosen profession.

I've switched from a view of hating religious texts to actually enjoying them as historical philosophy books. It's interesting how so many vulnerable people are easily taken in by them.
