Which one do you prefer? You are quite possibly witnessing the start of my ARPS here as well. I've been planning a possible ARPS project for quite some time now (Yes, I realise my LRPS hasn't even been assessed yet, but its boring waiting for it.). The project might evolve a bit yet, but for the moment it is about human interaction with animals. Not so much pets, but more working animals and our interaction with wildlife. the shots will very from closeup portraits like this, to more classic posed portraits. The shots planned so far are;

A man who hunts with an Eagle
A Farmer during lambing season
Pigeon fanciers
Whippet/Greyhound racers
Gypsy horses
Sheep dogs
Hunting with ferrets

I need a total of 15 shots for the ARPS, so im either going to need to double up on some characters or find more possible situations.

The landscape is better in my opinion bud, I second that the darker background works better.

I also think it's better that you can see all of his right hand whereas part is cut off the portrait picture.

It also seems to me that the fellow has his hands in a more natural position, as in the portrait it gives the impression he is holding them out for the sake of the photo.

I think I see where you are going. Here are some more ideas for scenes that might help bring you to the number:

sheep shearing
horse shoe fitting
horse ploughing
leaches?
truffle hunting
using elephants for hauling lumber
Huskies pulling a sled
Monkey cranking an organ?
Medical research?

First one for me mate.

The vertical is much better with the right hand coming in from bottom left and the shallower DOF draws your eye to the bird-hand and the pliers rather than the other hand which is fairly plain.

The dark background of the landscape version combined with the dark coat doesn't provide enough separation between the background elements and the main focal point of the image which should be the bird and the interaction with it through the hands.

In the first one I prefer the angle of the pliers, which acts like an arrow pointing to the bird. I also prefer the angle of the birds head because, although the difference is minimal, you get more of the birds eye and it looks like it is trying looking at you.

I actually think there is more detail in the guys hand in the first one although there is less detail in the birds tail feathers. I don't think it's a major issue though.

Cracking shots and processing as ever mate. Good luck with the LRPS and the ARPS.
