The blue wire in the CPU fan

Hello

I got a new system that has a intel stock cpu cooler.. Well the story goes like this. I got my system the other day and everything was going fine then i heard a random noise from the system i turned off the system asap and opened the case to find a blue wire that is apart of the stock cpu had got caught in the cpu fan blade. I pulled the blue wire away from the blade but the blade has cut this the fan is still going and the system seems to be running smooth. My questions are what is this blue wire? Will i have any damage to my cpu ? The blue wire is broke but everything seems to run ok should i try to mend this wire or buy new cpu cooler ?

The blue wire is the PWM signal wire. Without it the fan should stay at full speed all the time. If you repair it you should regain the ability to control the fan speed, if you choose to.

Thanks tealc. what would you do in my case ? Is it ok to leave at full speed ? Im thinking long term... AND will my processor have any damage from the cpu fan stopping ?

If you turned it off as soon as you heard something its likely not.

I would just get a new fan (or at least try to fix it) rather than letting it run at full.

Repairing is easy. Twist or solder then insulate with tape or heatshrink. Running full speed may cause the fan to fail earlier than if it were running at less than full speed. It's unlikely just to stop suddenly as fans usually show sign of wear by making a noise which will annoy you enough to replace a long time before it seizes.

Replacing is also easy, and probably a better idea if you like quieter running or lower temperatures, or both.

What sort of budget do you have for an upgrade to your cooler? How quiet and how cool do you want it?

I have a decent budget I hope to get more out of my system maybe overclock the cpu and upgrade my card with your advice ofcourse....

Thats my system

Intel i5 3.4GHz
8GB DDR3 Kingston RAM
2TB Hard drive
600W PSU
GTX 550 Ti

First, welcome to OCUK
There are the "top 5" within 2c of each other and there are "top 30" within 3c of "top 5".
Top 5 are 60+ quid.
Top 30 are 15+ quid.
Read some of the other threads here about coolers here to get a feel of what it's all about.
