A mainstay of my 3 years boarding at a convent back in the early 80s.

According to wiki he is second only to Hans Christian Anderson in Danish literature. Had no idea.

Anyone else a fan?

Sven Hassel and convents, two things i thought i'd never see together in a sentence.

read a load of them when i was younger, lost track of how many he actually wrote. was a film done of one, IIRC

The Misfit Brigade. The Misfit Brigade is a 1987 American television film loosely based on Sven Hassel's novel Wheels of Terror.

loved them back in my school days. People criticise them for not being "real" and historically inaccurate but so what, the guy was there and he embellished the situations a bit. Who cares. It was interesting to find some of his photos online and put faces to names.

I was an avid reader, when I could find them, of his series of books around the late 70's.
At some point I might be tempted to find them again, this time reading them in order.
His own character, Sven, not necessarily being central to any of the books, iirc.
