Specifically, as it's going to be staying in the living room, a good storage case solution (he's clumsy too, so that would double up as protection and something to keep it tidy).

Is the pro strap needed? Not interested in extra battery as that will help limit his single-session play time. Rechargeable batteries for the controllers a good idea? etc etc

Definitely storage if it's somewhere there's sunlight coming in. Sunlight on the lenses will burn the screens fast, permenant irreversible damage. Once it's on his head, sunlight is not a problem.

If he's clumsy, you want to make sure his guardian space is far away from anything breakable (that's the area you setup as your playzone, it flashes up if you get close to the edge, and swaps into passthrough mode if you walk through it).

A better strap is definitely recommended, but it doesn't have to be much. There's a few rubber type skullcap attachments that go onto the original strap at the back, I bought one for very little from an overseas shop, took a while to arrive, but you've got till christmas anyway. I wrapped mine in old memory foam then. Of course, there's also the elite style straps, and halo style.

You may not care about a powerbank for extra run time, but you do want to attach something to the back of the headstrap, it provides a counterweight which in my opinion is the single biggest comfort mode.

Good points, many thanks! Good point on the counter-balance, he's only got a small head so that may help more than most modifications!

I don't know if the elite straps etc go smaller than the default. My son started using my q2 when he was 9, though not often, and I could just about get it tight enough. The advantage with doing the padding yourself is you can make it thicker, so more likely to hold.

Is it a new headset? Do you have a friend with a headset already. If it's a new one, you can use a referral from someone (if you don't know anyone with a headset, there's plenty here!) so that both you, and your referrer, get £23 in game store credit, a nice way to get started. You can also ask for game referrals, that give 25% off the game (and the referrer gets £4 in store credit).

How old is he and will you be using the headset? The setup I have, is I have my main account, and then I created a second under my wifes name. I buy games on the main account, and my boy mostly uses my wifes account, using the App Sharing feature, almost anything I own, can be played by him on her account for free (I have my own headset, and we can even play games together, having only bought them on my account).

If he's got a small head it might be a good idea to check his IPD using an app like GlassesOn.

The lowest setting on Q2 is 58mm.

It probably won't do his eye development much good if he is under this by more than 2-3 mm.

Good to know, it's the second Quest 2 in the household (older brother has one, but use case is a bit different)

He's 9... I was imagining just setting him up an account and managing it myself so that it doesn't interfere with any of our stuff. I may see if I can get the two boys to be able to App Share between the two of them, good info!

Noted, I'll have to try it surrepticiously so he doesn't start asking difficult questions ahead of Christmas......

Use the older brothers account to refer to the younger one (assuming it's new), using the new younger brothers account. Once activated, factory reset, put the older brothers account on as the primary, then add the younger brothers account, enabling app sharing. This will allow younger brother to play games from older brother for free. Might need to make sure only appropriate apps are installed? They will both also then have £23 free credit, make sure younger brother doesn't buy anything older brother has, as it's a bit of a waste.

Minimum age stated by meta is 10. Most vr sets say 13 due to concerns over how it affects children's development.
