the card that changed everything

The Voodoo3 was the first card that I saved up and bought, just brilliant. 3Dfx were the daddies back in the day.

My personal card progression
Voodoo3 -> GeForce4 Ti4600 -> 9800XT -> X850Pro -> 2900XT -> 4870X2 :D

how come everything since the Ti4600 has been an ATi?

i mean, i understand the 9800XT and the 4870X2, but why the X850 and the 2900XT?

the game was crap but the tech demo on the power vr was breath taking at the time....my first experience of 3d accelerated graphics.

as for games....3dfx and glide simply ruled
 
When I got my 4mb Voodoo 1 and played quake2 GL, my jaw fell off, There has been nothing to date that tops that.

I dunno really, I've just grown loyal to Ati and AMD (though I wouldn't call myself a fanboi, I don't defend them blindly), I just can't seem to bring myself to click buy on an Nvidia card any more :p

The X850 was a cheap second hand card, because the 9800XT was dying and I couldn't afford one of the more powerful Nvidia cards that were out; the 2900XT was bought more in hope than judgement :D
 
For me it was the 8800GT 512 the first decently priced GFX card that could actually run the latest crop of games...but hen ive only been a PC gamer for 2 yrs :)
 
Have to agree on the 3dfx. It was the biggest leap, after that its been in small steps, 4200ti, 9700pro, 6800, 8800 then the current crop of Ati cards imo. The worst generation since then has to be the geforce 5xxx series, absolute gash.
 
I remember my 1st one was a 16mb voodoo3, my mate had a banshee and was so jeallous of me :P my m8's brought there pc's round for cs with bots... was awesome. no comparing fps etc either, just enjoying the game and the fun of shooting each other and typing childish messages to someone sat 4 feet away lol. that made me get isdn hoime highway for online play... them were the days

order of my gfx
voodoo3, gf256, ti4200, 9600pro, x1800xt.... now looking at new upgrade but so much choice its a nightmare
 
If you're thinking of anything other than the 3dfx voodoo then you simply weren't there at the time. Everything else since has been incremental. Granted some increments have been greater than others but the arrival of the voodoo was the day that gaming came to the PC.

I even bought stock in 3dfx during the dotcom boom only to have them reward my investment by promptly going bust and having their good bits hoovered up by Nividia!

For me it was the first graphics card I owned that gave me the wow factor, although I do remember being impressed by the performance leep after the Voodoo 3. All of the early cards listed below were hand-me-downs from my Dad's machine.

i had a powervr card.
i agree with the GLquake post above - it was nothing short of amazing and the first time i had seen 3d acceleration on a pc.
Texture filtering was also a revelation at the time - people take it for granted these days.
