the card that changed everything

I dont understand people mentioning the 8800gtx as the card that changed everything?? there is only one card and that is the vodoo 3dfx...cant understand any of the other cards mentioned...maybe im just old :-)

Yeah unless they are ~25 or older they probably didn't experience or appreciate what the voodoo 1 did for gaming graphics and such they tend to judge against their first PC with the inevitable integrated graphics against their first actual graphics card and the huge boost in visual settings at playable fps that allowed.

If we keep saying Voodoo i'm sure something weird will happen eventually.

Shrunken hEEdz or something equally hillarious!

i think even the 22 and up age group were bought up on it..im 22 and remember my friends older brother getting one, must have been around 10 at the time....wow is all i can remember saying:D

Have to agree with all the others with a 3DFX Voodoo 1 and Quake 2

I remember my first PC I had built with that card in it. Me and a mate fired up Quake 2 and thought yeah it looks OK and is running faster than his PC. Then we realised we hadn't turned on the option to use the Voodoo. We did that and were absolutely gobsmacked how good it looked :D

PowerVR who gave us FSAA, 32-bit colour and AF and many other great features.

Never really like 3DFX I remember looking at 3DFX running GlQuaka and thinking was a giant step backwards it was compared to PowerVR version.

Playing Unreal in SGL with 32-bit colour and FSAA was stunning. (SGL being PowerVR API).

Got to agree, I thought that PowerVR was technically better than 3Dfx. For a start it ran at 1024x768 rather than 800x600 of the 3Dfx. I had a PVR first and then 3Dfx later (SLI). But I would say that the 3Dfx was the card to really change things because of its widespread support and user uptake.

PowerVR may have been better it terms of technoligy, but technoligy is only worth having if you can properly utilise it.

What 3dfx gave the world other than the Voodoo was Glide, and for a good few years that was the standard untill Direct3D and OpenGL gained momentum and acceptance in the gaming world.

voodoo for me, i can't believe so many people are saying geforce 256. Okay it was damn quick in DDR but hardware TnL did bugger all and it brought nothing groundbreaking. I would go as far to say a TNT2 Ultra was the better card.

Other one i would like to mention is the Kyro 2, slower than GF2mx when relased but as new games came out it was beating the GF2 ultra, with no TnL rubbish either!

Finnally the Voodoo 5, the 4 x FSAA on that card still hasn't been beaten :( Shame it only had the poke to use it in 2/3yr old games ever back then.

anyone remember the game kingpin - life of crime... that was the 'high spec' games back then for the voodoo 2, was a nightmare to set up when the OpenGL didn't want to work :(

Why is the 9800Pro being mentioned...?

Surely the 9800 just used the 9700 Pro as a base to build on.

It was the 9700 Pro that changed everything for ATI and nvidia at the time. Not the 9800 :P

voodoo 1 changed it for me...didnt really go a lot on pc gaming allways had the latest consoles, then i seen unreal in my brothers pc mag..and quickly got my brother to build me a pc with a voodoo 1 card in it..i can picture the blood, smoke and water fx now it was truely amazing at the time..must be 11 years ago...

Because it is the first unified shader architecture card, the biggest overhaul in GPU technology since the first GeForce?

Obviously the Voodoo was the biggest change.

The 8800GTX heralded a huge change, look at the scenario at the moment: A 8800GTX is still a really powerful card, but any card below that is now completely worthless at running current games!
