I'm just about to buy my next GFX card. Currently I'm using an Nvidia 8800GTS 384MB Pre-OC.

Currently looking at:

XFX HD 4890 1GB DDR5 Dual DVI HDTV Out

or

PALIT GTX275 896MB GDDR3 Dual DVI HDTV Out PhysX and Cuda ready

Been hearing a lot of people saying that the ATI cards are having a real improvement in comparison to what they used to be like. My slight drawback is that i had an ATI X1800XT before and that started to screen freeze after 1 month of useage!

The Nvidia, Who the heck are PALIT??? I've never heard of this company are they any good? According to PALIT's website I will also need to upgrade the power supply, i got a corsair 520w which i only bought barely 8 months ago, the ATI "should" work with it fine according to XFX's website where they say it only needs min of 500w

Either card would suit you very well, but bear in mind the 4890 is pretty noisy - you might be able to put up with it, but mine's going back :(

The Corsair 520 will be fine.

Palit are the parent brand of Gainward and XpertVision (maybe a few others). They sell their stuff pretty cheap but it's good quality.

If u decide on the GTX 275 I would pay another £20 and get the 1792Mb card. It will last much longer.

Yes I agree it is a hard decision , but it depends on what games you play, if you have a look on the reviews, the HD4890 is only behind on some games(Crysis for one) at the lower resolutions , but when the resolutions gets higher the larger amount of memory on the hd4890 helps it beat the GTX275. Overall the HD4890 beats the GTX275 in most games. But if you played games which could take Advantage of Physx the GTX 295 would be better as you could use your current card as Physx if your motherboard and PSU supports it.
So ultimately;
HD4890 if you can’t take advantage of Physx
And
GTX 275 if you can

Edit: IT seems Physx is pointless at the moment so if it was up to me I would choose the HD4890, but basically now I think it’s up to personal preference.

What?

I have read the exact opposite in benchmarks

on Stock they're pretty much par on par, however when overclocked this is where 4890 shines.

So i'd go for the 4890 if you overclock your GPU, as it would yeild better performance as appose to 275 OC'd.

Coin flip or whatever's cheaper to be honest. They're pretty much the same thing as far as your gaming will be concerned. The only thing to really consider is that the 4890 is a bit noisy apparently, compared to the Nvidia stock cooler (though note that the GTX275's that are currently shipping use a palit (inc. the Gainward) non-reference design, which I don't know is any better or worse on that front - it does have two fans, though).

Just to clarify my stance on this: I've seen a few reviews on both cards, particularly comparisons - it seems they are about similar performance wise, sometimes the 4890 will beat the GTX285, other times it'll be more like a GTX260, but those are relatively uncommon phenominons, usually it seems the 4890 and GTX 275 are more or less equally matched.

My 260 has a similar (looks identical) cooler to the Palit/Gainward 275s, which isn't quite as quiet as the stock 280 I had before, but seems to work OK. It's a mile away from the noise the 4890 makes anyway.
