Normally, I'm a beer or wine drinker. But recently I've found myself looking past the hands pumps to the spirits shelves. I usually stick to what I know, G&T, but if it's going to be a long night I'll opt for anything boozy mixed with some kind of energy drink.

I'd like to broaden my horizons a little. I'd like to try some real cocktails, not just spirit and a mixer.

So I thought I'd start this thread for people to post their favourite cocktails. They can be classics or your own creation. Alcoholic or non-alcoholic. Spirit based or non-spirit based.

Whilst I'd like to try some classic cocktails I want to leave the definition of what a cocktail is as broad as possible so as to not exclude any of your creations.

So, for the purpose of this thread a cocktail shall be any drink made from two or more different liquids. Water may be included in the cocktail but it must not be one of the two liquids required to qualify it as a cocktail. This is to prevent any smart arses (you know who you are :p) from suggesting orange squash as a cocktail.

Feel free to post images of your creations just make sure you obey the usual forum rules (no hotlinking, nothing too risqué or offensive, etc.). A maximum width of 1024 might make the thread a little tidier but post high-res images if you prefer, so long as the dons don't mind.

I much prefer cocktails to any other drink...

My favourite classic cocktail is Sex on the Beach...

2 parts Vodka
1 parts Peach schnapps
2 parts Orange juice
2 parts Cranberry juice

However I'll usually just have what ever I can make...

For a good start to a boozey day ... a Bloody Mary

I like it this way: muddle a couple of slices of lime and a couple of slices of cucumber in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Then add plenty of ice. 1 shot citrus vodka and 1 shot chilli vodka. Pour over your tomato juice and then add worcester sauce, tobasco, teaspoon of horseradish, salt and plenty pepper. Shake well then strain into a glass and garnish with celery or a slice of lime or a slice of cucumber. Splash of Tio Pepe on top.

For a super hot sunny day boozing outside...Raspberry and Pineapple Daiquri.

You need 2 blenders for this....for the raspberry side of things....white rum and chambord with some sugar syrup, plenty of raspberrys and ice...blend it up. Same for pineapply but swap out raspberrys for pineapple (duh) and chambord for passoa/pineapple sourz/triple sec etc. Now the tricky part of pouring it at the same time into opposite sides of the glass and so it comes out in equal amounts. Tough to do but can look really good. Garnish with a slice of pineapple and a couple of raspberrys of course!

For a winter's night....Hazelnut Espresso Martini

This is just one I make myself sometimes cause i like hazelnut and i like coffee! Shaker with ice (for a change)...add vodka, kahlua and frangelico, wee splash of sugar syrup and a shot of espresso. Shake strain...enjoy.

Heaps more but I will jsut waffle for ages. :)

White Witch:

1 measure white rum
1/2 measure cointreau
1/2 measure creme de cacao (white/clear)
1/2 measure lime juice

shake

pour over ice, top up with soda water :)

Oh and quickly a Cosmopolitan:

2 measures Absolut Citron (I just use straight vodka as I'm too cheap :p)
1 measure cointreau
1 measure lime juice
3 measures cranberry juice

shake and strain into a martini glass! :)

Two I have quite often:

Martini - Anyone who can't make, and finish a Martini isn't a man:
2 measures of good gin. (Tanquery is what I'd go for, or Bombay);
half a measure of dry vermouth;
Ice; and
Olive to garnish, or lemon twist, depending on your tastes.

Pour gin and vermouth into a cocktail shaker, add ice. Stir it well (about 14 stirs). Don't shake (it bruises the gin), strain into a chilled Martini glass. Drop the olive in the bottom, or twist the lemon twist to get some oils into the drink and then plop it on top.
Drink, light your cigar and nod nonchalantly at the tasty woman opposite.

Boston Sour:
2 measures of whisky (want quite a neutral one, your run of the mill blends are fine);
Juice of half a lemon;
Egg white;
Cherry;
1 teaspoon of sugar;
Lemon slice; and
Ice.

Shake whisky, egg white, sugar and lemon juice over ice. Strain into a glass (I generally use a brandy snifter, but anything works), add the slice of lemon and the cherry. Drink it up!

A nice variant on a dry martini is a dirty martini - make up just as Ahleckz says (though I really like Hendricks gin, and for the vermouth noilly pratt is the best), but add a teaspoon of olive juice. A drop or 2 of tabasco is really nice as well, though is better when using cheaper gin.

I love a margarita as well, simplest version is equal quantities of tequila, triple sec and fresh lime juice shaken over ice and served in a glass with a salt rim (dip glass rimin lime juice then salt) and a slice of lime. You can vary the amounts of triple sec and lime juice depending on how sweet/sour you like it. Excellent on a hot day with a plate of nachos.

Finally, the classic cosmopolitan - equal quantities of citron vodka, cointreau and cranberry juice shaken over ice and served in a martini glass with a twist of orange rind, then avoid watching sex and the city...

Cheers!

Long Island Iced Tea for me.

There's a couple of things I'm fussy about though..

1) It should be the color of iced tea. In this country people often use too much coke, which both makes it too dark and too sweet.

2) When served with a slice of lemon/lime the fruit should be on the side of the glass, not inside it. If dropped into the glass the fruit can make the drink go a little cloudy, thus spoiling the appearence.

My favourite of all time is a simple Moscow Mule. Equal parts good vodka and firey ginger beer, with half a crushed lime in - squeeze out the juice then plop the lot in. An additional thing I like to do which I've never seen anyone else do before is to grind a little fresh pepper on top. Adds a little extra kick. :)

Yes this! :D

Local place in town used to serve 5 measures (vodka/gin/rum/tequila/cointreau) with about 1 litre of coke! Couldn't taste anything! :(

I made a Strawberry Margarita last night. Experimented a few times and personally I decided on:

1 shot tequila (silver) (some recipes use 2 shots but this ruins the blend and is too harsh imo)
1 shot triple sec (any less and it's too sour)
Half shot of fresh squeezed lime (no more than half shot or too sour for me)
3/4 shot of strawberry liquor
2 shots of freshly pureed strawberries (used blender)
two pinches of caster sugar (what can I say I like them sweeter than some).

Put all into shaker with ice and shake for 10 seconds

Pour straining into frosted rim glass (lime and caster sugar edged) and enjoy.

I had one of these in a pub the other week and literally all we could taste was lime. She must have squeezed like 2 limes in, and then garnished with lime...which was floating inside it. Noob. ;)

The only one I can make somewhat competently is the Bahamma Mama

15 ml Bacardi
15 ml Malibu
15 ml Grenadine Syrup
30 ml Orange juice
30 ml Pineapple juice
All mixed with some crushed ice

Anyone know how to make the TGI Friday's gremlin cocktail? I've got all the ingredients but every time I try and make one it looks like sewage :(

Same here. Havana Club is the best with a mojito imo. People who use bacardi in their mojito's should be shot.

Havana Club isn't dark though :p

If you like dark rum (Lambs/Captain Morgan) then try this:

1 measure dark rum
1 measure cointreau
1 measure double cream

shake, strain into martini glass! :D

I invented a cocktail a few nights ago - the first that actually tasted like a proper cocktail and not just a bunch of ingredients poured into a glass.

- Cut half a lime into segments and drop into a Boston shaker along with a few torn mint leaves. Muddle together.
- Add crushed ice.
- Pour in two measures of Sipsmith gin (or other high quality gin)
- Add two measures of cranberry juice.
- Add a dash of grenadine and a couple of shakes of Angostura bitters.
- Shake for five seconds.
- Crack the shaker over a martini glass and decorate with one of the lime rinds.

I call it the Mustachiotini because it leaves small pieces of mint on your top lip, and because it's totally gay. But delicious.
