This stems from a conversation I had in the pub last night, it will probably turn into a rant so apologies in advance.

From what I gather, you fill in a quick form to get accepted onto Job Seekers Allowance then every two weeks you attend a quick 5 minute talk with a person at the Job Centre, effectively lie through your teeth and state a few places where you have been looking for jobs then collect tax payers money out of your bank account every two weeks.

This bloke who I had the unfortunate company of last night had been 'looking for work' and on JSA for 14 months, he was openly boasting about how slack the system was and he was enjoying life doing nothing and soon he would be moving into his own house which was fully paid by the benefit system. He was well dressed and didnt seem short of money for drinks and cigarettes.

I think the whole dole system (and benefits in general) needs a complete rework, I think after initially signing up, the person should have a compulsory full medical to prove that he/she is fit to work and then given 6 months to find a job. I feel this is more than enough time to find a job if you are open minded and genuinely want to find work. There are jobs out there if you look hard enough. After still being unemployed for 6 months, compulsory work should be given to the claiment in order to get their money whether they like it or not or their benefit is stopped. This work could be anything, sweeping the streets, cleaning toilets - anything. Just to stop the person sitting indoors all day doing nothing and getting free money. This is just off the top of my head but im sure the system could be improved vastly.

Anyone else fed up of these types of people and the way the Government deals with them?

Sorry for the long post and general rant, needed to get that off my chest this morning!

Seams to me you are looking for a rant.
So go out side untill you cool down, then do a search and you find the last post on this.

all is calm with the world once more

That chap must have a particularly lax benefits team then. Every 13 weeks you'll have another in-depth interview and if you can't prove you've been looking for work, you should get chucked off. You need to provide documentary evidence such as letters sent/received from prospective employers, etc. After 12 months you are supposed to go on New Deal or whatever.

Some of 'em then go on to be drunks and druggies and claim even more money?
There is no excuse for idleness in my opinion and if you can be idle about one thing you can most certainly be idle about another. You are right, there is no excuse for doing nothing and if I had my way I would introduce compulsory voluntry work for the dole anyway. They are not just a drain on resources but a drain on the quality of life of those around them.

i'm a dole scrounger, as you put it. :p

you get 59 quid a week. because i live on my own, i have to buy all my own food and pay the bills. and there certainly isn't enough change to go out buying clothes or going to the pub. i guess that guy has different living arrangements to me. or maybe he's doing a little work on the side?

as for the job centre. yes they are very slack. they really couldn't give a monkeys. not once have been asked to prove what i've done to look for work and i've been signing on for a few months now.

your blood boiling yet? :D

Are you looking for work though or are you just happy as you are?

My blood was boiling last night listning to this bloke carry on but im ok now, its not up to me how people want to live their lifes, I just struggle to to relate to their mentality.

I have nothing against people who do actually have problems that refrains them from working, its just laziness that annoys me.

yep, it is a joke, my waste of space uncle has only worked a few weeks in the last 30 years. All he has to do is go to the job centre and look like he's searching. If he does actually get the job. He says it's to hard and gets sacked/leave. And he's back on the dole.

There's nothing wrong with him, totally fit and able to work. He's just a sad waste of space human.

he goes to the pub and has a couple most days, doesn't get drunk.
Can afford a 10" tft screen and a dvd palyer.

yup i'm looking for work. i don't like being on the dole one bit. and i'm not fussy either. i've always worked low paid jobs and i don't have high expectations. i've been made redundant twice in recent years (and i'm only 31 :p). the first time i went down an agency and they found me a job and i started work the next day. there was an abundance of work. but since losing my last job, i've been around the agenices and there's bugger all.

I'll bet you attitude will change should you ever find yourself needing to claim.

Why the hell should I take any old job? I've been in the same job for EIGHTEEN years, I've paid my tax in full since I was obliged to at whatever age it was back then, screw you if you think you can make me sweep the streets.

Why should you claim when you can get a job. I would preffer to take any job than claim *** dole. Gte of your lazy bum and find anything. It'll also help your prospects.

New employer for good job, what have you done for *** last x -months.

"I've been on the dole"
or
"I've been looking for xyz job, but have been working at a supermarket/warehouse to keep myself going, this shows dedication etc from going to this job to that etc."

Which looks better to a potential employer.

Thats exactly where you've hit the nail on the head - but remember its not just their mentality its also the system.

The system whereby people in some cases are financially better off on the dole as opposed to working - I work and am a student (both full time) I've decided to go back to education in order to better myself and hopefully i'll eventually create better job prospects (and money) for myself.

This system is paying for my education for which am grateful (so its not all bad) It simply needs an overview in order to weed out those simply dont want and have no intention of working. Am proud to say i've never claimed dole/jobseeker (what ever its called now a days) allowance, but you never know whats round the corner - one day you or I might need to make use of that system !

yeah, i guess it is a bit "easy" to get the dole..

but i'm sure that its kept on record and eventually it's paid back somehow whilst at work (citation?)

I think you should get any job as soon as possible, then you can always look for a better one...

Why should I? I have some savings, the less than sixty quid a week I get from JSA doesn't even begin to cover my living expenses, I'd rather spend a few months getting some retraining done than go get a job that pays me next to nothing while I struggle to retrain and look for work at the same time. It's my money I'm spending, I already paid it to the government many many times over.

If I don't find a job I want in a few months then I shall re-assess the situation and take any job going as I will be unable to afford to continue as I am currently.

What would you do if the Job Centre made you do a crap job though like they do in other countries?

Depends on how much the job paid, I need a certain amount to keep my mortage running etc etc.

If your retraining thats fair enough. a lot don't and just expect to get a smiliar job or stay on the dole.

If I had wanted to stay in the same field I could have specified restrictions for six months, as in, no I don't want to travel, pay must be X a month, etc etc. I didn't and as such I can't restrict it. Had I done so I could guarantee that no jobs would have been available within that six month period and could have sat on my backside.

I'll take a job if it comes up, I apply for jobs all the time but it's pretty difficult breaking into a new field when you have no 'experience' even when you do have qualifications.

yes, you pay tax. But so does everyone else  You're just being an idiot.

Its just lazy to claim the dole, people whine about there being no jobs but people just don't want to do the rubbish one.

As said above(acidhell), its better to be working and looking for a better job than chilling on the dole looking for a better job

My dad got made redundant a couple years back at 52, took him 10 months to find another job that'd take him, he's now back in IT.

You saying he shouldn't've got the dole after 6 months? He'd've lost his house, car etc.
