my friend asked me today why dont they release graphics cards and alter them to fight competition as time goes on rather then waiting for each other to release. like consoles *bangs head against wall* he thinks it would be better this way.

my obviouse answer was that would **** customers off that have spent 500 pound on say an ati 5970 or 6990 and its not as simple as that as graphics cards arent distributed in the same way. but it did get me thinking what are the real factual reasons for this ? any insight would be great.

yea I think we need some more detail here :) expand on that example of competition in the world of consoles, this might cast some light on the case :D

The first line is really weird as graphics cards are changed a lot more often than consoles. You could say this is altered in some sort of manner. Some gpu's you could say were altered like the 4870 going on to be a 4890. The core clock was altered from 750 (4870) to 850 on the 4890 and i think the memory speed was higher. You could also voltage tweak the 4890 but as far as i can remember thats all that was changed or altered if you like.

From ati/amd you had 3870/4870/5870 which in a lot of ways are the same graphics cards with more stuff added on as you go up the numbers. These have been changed much more than any console.

I am still not sure what the overall question was but thats all i can add atm without knowing what i am answering.

yeah sorry lol i thought it might of sounded abit confusing i dont know how to word it my mate basically thinks it would be better to release a card rather then delay it.

like the ati 6990 was and if something better comes out a couple of months later say.. the gtx 590 alter the 6990 in some way to make it better

it sounds far fetched to me as well which is why i'm having trouble explaining it but i also cant put up a valid arguement against my mate. which is why i thought i'd turn to you guys.

I think I know what you mean.

Just tell him that those large companies employ ppl who studied the market for years upon years and that they get paid lots of money to know when exactly to release a card, that might work :D

the only arguement i can think of against it is say i bought an ati 5970 then like a month they altered it in someway to make it better i'd be pretty ****ed. its a dumb post haha but i want to prove my mate wrong.

Well I nearly did it when I bought my GTX285, I was gonna buy GTX280 but in that exact same week 285 came out fixing lots of stuff :D So if i'd bought 280 Id be well ****ed off right now :D

trust me i've tried haha he thinks its really dumb to hold off releasing a card just because the other company wont release theres.

i think a mixture of all your answers has answerd it for me they do release the same card but slightly better like the 6950 unlocking into a 6970 and most cards are just revisions of the same pcb with slightly better clocks and variouse alterations.

but basically what caused the debate was my mate thought it was dumb that nvidia was holding off on releasing the gtx 590 because the ati 6990 was delayed last year.

Tell your mate its most likely amd holding off releasing the 6990 to get everything from it that they can. Nvidias dual gpu was always meant to be coming now or even later from the bits and pieces floating around the net. The 6990 on leaked slides was meant to be january. Amd are probably trying to make the 6990 as fast as they can but still trying to keep the voltage to a minimum and also stock pile as many gpu's as possible.

to be honest though we never really know why things are done.

yeah i did say something similer to that but he just replied with why not release the card in november and release a new card now in march i said its not as simple as that but he is persistant on fighting his corner i think the arguement is a losing battle because he is purely a console gamer and doesnt know much about graphics cards at all so i think its a losing battle trying to explain haha.

so i will end this waste of a thread with bring on the ati 6990! or 590 i'll have to see which is better but truth is its going to be a close one.

lol I just love when ppl who play only on the consoles talk about graphics cards or about how xbox 360 graphics are superior to pc's (you'd be surprised how many times I was told that). 360 must be running on something like 7800 GTX or something right?
