the debate between a friend.

yeah i did say something similer to that but he just replied with why not release the card in november and release a new card now in march i said its not as simple as that but he is persistant on fighting his corner i think the arguement is a losing battle because he is purely a console gamer and doesnt know much about graphics cards at all so i think its a losing battle trying to explain haha.

so i will end this waste of a thread with bring on the ati 6990! or 590 i'll have to see which is better but truth is its going to be a close one.

If hes a console gamer then ask him why cod 3 to black ops never came out inside 2 years. It takes time to design a card as it does a game. The gpu also needs time to sell and make money before you kill it with your newer game.

To be fair though, that's backwards progress - we're talking about forward progress :p...

eurgh cod :( what ever happend to games like rainbow six, swat, the original call of duty allied assualt

and i would but i dont think i'll bring the conversation up again :P

I think I get what you mean but it's not as simple as just "altering" the card - billions are spent on designing new graphics cards.

I mean first of all, the card itself has to be designed. But this isn't as easy as just adding more shaders and bumping clocks. The process needs to be considered - so that power constraints don't cause the card to be unmanufacturable. It needs to work to a TDP that a realistic cooler can dissipate, and not suck in so many watts that modern PSUs can't cope.

Once that's done, it goes to the fab for a first spin. IF this works, then you can start considering putting it into production. If it doesn't, it's back to the design stage to see where it went wrong, and for it to be corrected.

Obviously it's hugely simplified, but thinking "oh, just alter it" is simple is wrong. It's not simple at all - it's incredibly expensive to design and produce a high-end card.

I blame consoles :D not many clever and original games out these days, Only games that are even remotely innovative are the independent games like Magicka. I can't believe developers don't acknowledge that there is a demand for games like that, only hope for now is Skyrim imo.

^^^ this is the answer i'm looking for he can't argue with this. haha :P

skyrim ***! and i got to admit dragon age really brought me back to my baldurs gate days although limited. but it was still epic cant wait for dragon age 2

I never said the game was good lol but it is one of the biggest selling games of all time so i used it. Lets be honest though the original call off duty was excellant.

It was brilliant I really miss the depth games had back then now it's all watered down that's why I play eve online because of the depth it has compared to today's games

I played eve online for 5 years but was always into the small roaming gang side. They pretty much wiped that side out so characters been offline for 4 months. Eve is definately a great mmo though.

NVidia/ATI will often hold back on the release of their latest and greatest to shift high stocks of previous generation GPU's at a higher cost. It's called market strategy and increasing profit margins. There are of course many other factors involved such as if a competitor brings out a faster or better bang per buck model.

If sales are affected then a new gpu will be released (if the tech exists), if older GPU's are still selling well, why would they release a new card to hinder those sales?

Dude I know exactly what you mean I love the small gang roaming side as well but blobs of enemy fleets have take. Over if you look carefully you can get some good small gang fights specially in Nullsec but the risk is far greater and a lot of the time you will have a battleship or 2 warp in so they can get the edge real shame. But I love the game just joined a new Corp and moving back out into nullsec.
