The Deep Net

I like how the responses here have varied from "it's just the internet stuck in the 90s" to "no one should ever visit" :p

Can always trust GD to give you a broad view point.

Tor browser and a couple of URLs that are readily available if you google for them and you are on the dark web. I went on once on my ipad...the only use would be to buy drugs and I have no interest in doing that.

I’m going on a little expedition this week, iv checked out “Tails” that’s got to be the way forward, I’m starting to enjoy this cloak and dagger anonymity stuff, and lurking about the deep net hiding in the shadows... damn that’s good I should have become a poet rather than an ... adventurer

Tor browser do a deep web Wikipedia, it’s a listing of websites and their addresses although the websites are just random numbers and letters, they all end in .onion There’s my map right there.

Do tor really hide you?

Then how come many people got their house raided for buying/accessing drugs/guns/illegal porn?

As much as anything because they get sloppy - especially a common one is complacency - they think stuff like TOR gives blanket protection, etc.

Also these days the level of general monitoring, etc. means that a certain amount of traffic matching is possible and other brute force/crude methods for narrowing down who is doing what, etc.

How do you access content? Presumably domain names aren't a thing as they are regulated so is it based on knowing the IP address/unique identifier of the site you want to access?

Seriously, don't bother. Unless you want to become mentally unstable some of the content on there is quite simply horrific. That said, I very much doubt you'd be able to find it.
Like most have said, you'll be looking at basically eshops selling weed.

i see, thanks for the explanation. i guess the tor browser has its own protocol? so ISP/internet police can 'see' you are using Tor?

I have no intention of trying, it was merely curiosity as to how it works.

Malware. When the FBI et al, compromise an illegal website they sometimes install malware on it which subsequently infects the users machine, such as a malicious javascript which phones home.

Easy enough to avoid that by using a sandboxed environment or disabling js or the like.

The other half are caught because they are having dodgy stuff shipped to their address and then when questioned own up to it.

ah, well the first step is in installing the tor browser but that only gets you in. You need to know people already on it and have a level of trust in place to give you the encrypted urls and login details.
Joe bloggs on the street doesn't stand a chance in hell. Basically if you are part of a terror group, pedo gang etc etc you already know people on it so that's your way in.

It's quite dangerous trying to access and navigate the dark web with normal modern computers due to not have DNS lockdown access, and through IP protocol and triangulation bump mapping your location may be compromised. If that happens it's likely your loved ones will be sold on the dark net as sexual slaves to burly dwarves who were long thought extinct living in deep dark caves. If you are lucky a wizard with a long grey beard will rescue you but it's probably not worth risking it tbh.

I've browsed random sites for curiosity using tor and found nothing of interest, the speed and quality was kind of like being back in 1997, maybe even worse.
