The Defenders (Marvel)

I don't think the actor is bad, I think the character of Danny Rand is really poorly written.
Critical reviews universally pan him as an awful and suited Iron Fist, and it's obvious after you make it through the first episode. Poorly written characters can still be likable. He isn't. At all.

He was hopelessly mis-cast.

Because his character is always written to be a petulant man-baby....

We're supposed to believe he grew up in Kunlun as a young boy/teenager through to Manhood, which would have taught self-discipline. Then we're told he was their best warrior and did the trial where he punched a Dragon in the heart....And he gets easily provoked and loses fights.

He should be written as naive about the modern World, not an angry idiot.

I noticed that the Defenders script even used the cliched "We're not so different, you and I" line twice!- Which I always hear now in a Dr. Evil voice.

Dear lord... the scene in episode 3 where Danny Rand goes to the boardroom and tells them who he is, that he knows who they are, and what he's going to do, is easily one of the most cringeworthy things I have seen in ages, it was just baaadddddd. Even the amazing Ms. Weaver couldn't save it.

For whatever reason you choose to blame it on, he's just a pants actor in this Marvel universe and I bet good money he will go own as the worst Marvel actor in modern history.

Just finished this, enjoyed it overall but its got lots of issues.

The fighting isn't as good as in Daredevil, different directors or something, shame as I love a good martial arts bust up. Does DD have a higher age rating?
Jessica Jones isn't annoying and actually quite good, was extremely annoying in her own show.
"The Immortal Iron Fist" is a tool.
Extra point for Wu Tang music in the end battle.
Foggy still annoying.
Blond side kick from Daredevil, forgot her name, still annoying/pointless.
Luke Cage still gets the best music.

Got to admit, I've grown tired of him.

I think it's 50/50. The writers took the wrong approach to Iron Fist, and the wrong actor was cast into the role. One of the two and it might have worked out okay. Miss on both points and the result is just a mess.

Personally, I'd have gone with an older, more experienced Iron Fist. Not old. About the same age as Oliver Queen on Arrow. Focus S1 of his show on his battle with The Hand over a number of years, culminating in his return to New York and Danny Rand laying claim to the family business. Hogarth represents him in the legal battle for his inheritance. He tells her the truth as to why he's back and The Defenders kicks off with Danny Rand back in charge of Rand Enterprises, with Hogarth assisting Rand in putting together a team of people to stop The Hand destroying New York. Cast an actor, 30-ish, with martial arts experience, job done. At worst it would have been serviceable.

In all honesty though, I think the biggest problem is that they simply didn't spend enough time on Iron Fist or The Defenders to really make either show work. They felt like they'd been rushed.
