I read the full book and thought it was awesome. It starts out great and turns tragic because fundamentally, whilst giving your life "freedom", all it eventually does is remove all sense of responsibility and guilt about what you are doing, turning you amoral.
Some real things the book brings up :
1) People don't like change.
2) People cling to their values, whether those values bless them or damn them.
3) Without those values to cling to, humans break down and end up simply following their base desires.
There was a lot to do with freedom of sex and self exploration, but very little about developing and expanding upon a stable person - or indeed, anything else. It ended up with the guy being extremely selfish and ending up alone, if I remember correctly (it was a while ago I read it).
