I have been using computers for 15 years now but to be honest I stopped learning about them 10 years ago after an Apple Mac showed me a little attitude and died on me, I really want to have a go at building my own pc but don't know which components work best with each other especially processors, there are so many diff ones. Is there a website that lists every chip in order of performance. I am not a gamer but I still want a pc that will last 5 years.

There's not too much to them. Basically the higher the FSB the better, higher the GHZ the better, more cores the better.

You can't have a PC that will last 5years anymore nowadays ;-).

I would say if you spend about 3000-4000quid it should last about 2,5-3years max. Sad but true.

However, you can get a cheap value rig every year or so and I think that's the best way to stay up to date :).

if he is not a gamer then a pc to last 5 years should be achievable,

I have a pentium 3 500mhz running windows 98, thats still doing the job it was built for, the only upgrade it has had was a new HDD with the image from the origonal, and thats still not been needed as the origonal is still running fine.
