The Dissertation/FYP thread 2008

I'm doing a degree in Police Studies. Always had an interest in that specific area, I've got a broad knowledge and good understanding of it already, so it seemed like a good choice. Figured it would stop be from getting bored or sick of it, which it has.
Ah, is this with a view to joining the Police? Why guns though? Something you are interested in?

Might even prove useful further down the line from a career point of view, too.
"I think I know how to use a gun sarge!" :p

8734 lines of code written, none of the actual report which is worth 90% (which is a joke, in my opinion, because the project is the actually useful part). Hope to have to software finished by the end of the week though.

writing the matrix then?

Literally JUST FINISHED mine. In 4.30pm tommorow :o

Its titled:

SYNTHESIS OF NOVEL PROSTAGLANDIN F2-ALPHA IN TRANSFORMED SACCHAROMYCES CEREVISIAE AND CONSTRUCTION OF AN EXPRESSION CASSETTE FOR PLANT TRANSFORMATION

That sounds pretty dull!

I've got a 3000 word essay on the mechanism of action of general anaesthetics, but still have a month to do it.

mines due in 5weeks, and the next 2 of those weeks im already pretty busy.
Iv literally done 2pages of my dissertation, Creative media technology thing.. aint started production, no doubt mines going to come out crap.
supposed to end up making an interactive animation with control functions to let u change certain things on the fly to experiment with how lights/sound etc can affect mood and emotion of media, so i can do a simple animation if i want, the problem is im probably going to have to use flash or director.. which im both completely useless at because iv not used them much, or use a completely new programming language.. although to be honest.. its mostly about the report that accompanys and iv got all the topics in my head that i need to cover.. but im rubbish at academic writing and finding references..

anyone ever used processing.org ? :)

The actual implications are awesome.

PGF-2alpha is an abortion drug and also used as treatment for glaucoma. However the current synthesis is pretty expensive. We cloned a PGF-2alpha synthase gene from T. brucei (they use prostaglandins as a virulence factor), cloned it and transformed yeast and manage to get high yields of expression, showing it should work in plants. We designed the construct for Arabidopsis transformation and plant yields should be due in 6 months :)

Cheaper drug is therefore more affordable in less economicly developed countries, hooray!

Or will company x just make more money...?

Ah fair enough, didn't know that about PGF-2alpha. That sounds more interesting I guess. I hope you and your lab and getting your 1% of the cuts! ;)

Can I just ask what are all the programmers programming? What sort of software?

Im modifying an open source proxy server (squid) in order to do some content analysis and detect/filter phishing websites using a new method before they reach the browser.

At this point in time, I'm giving serious consideration to applying with Thames Valley Police as Police Staff. Hopefully something like crime analysis, crime prevention, that sort of thing. Something that lets me put what I've learned to good use.

As for the firearms thing, I've had an interest (not in a gun-mad psycho way, for what it's worth) in firearms since I was a bit younger, especially the use of them by the police. Being able to look at the topic with a lot more depth - considering moral and ethical implications for example, or the impact of police culture on firearms officers, or the changes in training, equipment, firearms themselves, media influences etc - has been very enlightening. It's a topic I feel I'm very familiar with, I've got a damn good grasp of it and it's quite relevant to the current police situation in terms of recent events involving the police use of firearms, and yet it's quite an under-represented topic as far as academic books/journals are concerned.

I just find it to be a fascinating topic. So many people have absurd ideas about how, when and why the police use deadly force. Maybe I can convince some people to read through my work when I'm done and enlighten them. Not likely though!

1st year at Roehampton University. :)

This is my 4th year here in Stirling (Scotland). I'm considering doing the Msc in Primary Psychological Care (1 year course) after I leave provided I get the 2-1 that I am hoping for. Is you course 3 years or 4?

Just the 3...going okay so far. I have learnt to loathe SPSS and i'm not a fan of child development (Piaget and so on). :o

However i have taken an interest in lectures that go into detail about Psychology & war, crime and also clinical psychology. :)

I rushed mine in less than a month and got a first for it last year. Which made me suspect that I had actually attended MMU, Disneyland.

Anyone still dilly-dallying, just get down to it right now. You do not want to experience the utter dread of a last minute realisation :)

Mine is due Wednesday. Just finishing it off, polishing it up etc.

My project is titled, "Maze solving with a Lego NXT robot", but it's a bit more complex than that. I had to code a simulator in Java, test a load of algorithms, port them to the robot, build a maze, etc etc.

I'm currently at just shy of 16,000 words, and with no real word limit. I'm not going to go over 20,000, so I'm aiming for around 19,000 words. I'm doing it in LaTeX too, so it takes a little long than if I did it in Word - but it looks so much better.

Almost done... whooo!
