The Dissertation/FYP thread 2008

Just the 3...going okay so far. I have learnt to loathe SPSS and i'm not a fan of child development (Piaget and so on). :o

However i have taken an interest in lectures that go into detail about Psychology & war, crime and also clinical psychology. :)

We haven't covered Freud in any great detail really which may seem shocking to some. I guess its because a lot of his ideas are either crazy, silly or have "gone out of fashion" as I heard someone say recently. Anyway, yeah, I used to hate SPSS and thought it was tje Devil's program. However, come your dissertation you'll thank your lucky stars for it. It really is an ingenius little program, I know it won't seem like that at the moment and what I'm saying will probably sound like BS :p.

We covered Psychology of war etc last year specifically the war on terror, e.g. Bush vs bin Laden rhetorical analysis etc (ingroup vs outgroup theories etc). Also covered clinical last year too, but my favourite Psychology module has got to be Animal Behaviour, in which our report involved going to Edinburgh Zoo to collect data. :D Was awesome!

If anyone wants their Dissertation proof reading, I'll happily give it a look over, I'm always up for learning something new and after the pressure of writing mine last year, would like to read someones :).

Same :)

I even took grammar and composition so can help you punctuate like a pro :D

I've got to do a mini-dissertation this year in Spanish, but am looking to write a thesis of 15k words in English to publish on Tirso de Molina.

the Spanish one is only 5k words tho and I'm doing that on El Vergonzoso en palacio :D

Good luck all!

Mines due on the 24th of April I think. I started really well and had 23000 words done by January.

Including the appendix I have ~30000 words done now. Just gotta finish writing up my testing and critical reflection and i'll be done. Can't wait to get it over with, starting a PGCE in September so i'll have 3/4 months off :D

As for the firearms thing, I've had an interest (not in a gun-mad psycho way, for what it's worth) in firearms since I was a bit younger, especially the use of them by the police. Being able to look at the topic with a lot more depth - considering moral and ethical implications for example, or the impact of police culture on firearms officers, or the changes in training, equipment, firearms themselves, media influences etc - has been very enlightening. It's a topic I feel I'm very familiar with, I've got a damn good grasp of it and it's quite relevant to the current police situation in terms of recent events involving the police use of firearms, and yet it's quite an under-represented topic as far as academic books/journals are concerned.

I just find it to be a fascinating topic. So many people have absurd ideas about how, when and why the police use deadly force. Maybe I can convince some people to read through my work when I'm done and enlighten them. Not likely though!
Sounds like an interesting topic. Would be nice to read your dissertation once its finished? :)

Them's volunteering words! Seriously though, I might send you my dissertation and see what you think in terms of layout, spelling, grammer etc.

Just read this thread and it brought back memories for my disseration

Completed mine in 2006, and I have to say the last 2 weeks were killer (22 hour days!)

FYI: I did a 20,000 word document on psychoacoustics.

Good luck to all, hope you've done your reading :)

I did my dissertation last year but like Nokkonwud and Killa_Ken I'd be happy to volunteer my services as a proof reader - I can't guarantee that I'd be able to correct any technical flaws in the paper but grammar and spelling I should be fine with.

Good luck to everyone, my only real advice is to try not to leave it to the last minute and keep working at it whenever you get a chance.

Current Word Count: 0!
Final Word Count: guideline is about 40 pages but that includes all the maths which takes up a fair bit of room - written with LaTeX as well so a page has fewer words

Title: A calculation of the ground state energy levels for a large 2d quantum dot in a quartic potential (or something similar)
Status: Am way way behind - haven't even started writing code yet!!!

I seriously doubt anyone else knows anything about this but if anyone has ever written a code to find classical
periodic orbits let me know! Also has anyone ever used the gutzwiller trace formula? Nope? Oh well...

My limit's 35000 words, somewhere more like 20000 is enough though. Currently got extended notes for each section, need to turn those into a report. Literature review going to be most tricky, everything justified. I've got lots to talk about on work I've actually done myself, but talking about other people's work that has only a tenuous link is a bit dull.

Most of my actual code is written, just lots of testing to do on another machine I've got running and set up purely for testing...

Due in 7th May, as are two other smaller essays, but this one will get the most effort.

It's recognising features in complete and noisy 3D point clouds of human faces, for which I chose to use Matlab.

Ie 7/firefox works a charm. 1 line too

Kinda, it detects a lot of the sites which have been around for a bit. But I could setup a site now which firefox/ie would not detect simply because it works using a blacklist database.. I could provide a load of sites firefox/ie wont pick up since they are too recently created and not in the blacklist db yet.... The page heuristic algorithms are pretty poor. Ideally we want 100% detection rate which is impossible but you try to get as near as possible. My method reduces the onus on the end user for deciding if ie/firefox gets it right and an experienced user may admin it.

Not to mention the fact that not everyone uses firefox/ie to browse the web.. when your surfing from your ipod you have no anti-phishing plugin.
