The movie based on The Division has been boiling away in Development Hell since the original game launched but now all systems are go as the project has become a Netflix exclusive.

The movie will star Jake Gyllenhaal, currently wowing audiences as Mysterio in Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Academy Award nominee Jessica Chastain, and will be directed by David Leitch (Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde, The Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw) and written by Rafe Judkins (Agents of SHIELD, The Wheel of Time). Academy Award winner Stephen Gaghan had previously been attached to the project as both writer and director.

Matt Phelps, VP of Ubisoft’s Motion Pictures, said “Attaching Jake and Jessica is part of our development philosophy of working closely with top talent from the earliest stages to collaborate on a high quality film.”

The movie will follow the plot of the game, set in the near future where a virus has spread via contaminated cash on Black Friday, decimating New York City and killing millions of people. It’s up to The Division to save the day and “what remains of society.”

At present there is no release date for the movie, but Netflix usually move much faster than traditional movie studios so I would guess the movie will be out near the end of next year.
