For a long time now I have been trying to diagnose a kernel 41 power error with my home build. I'll start by listing the specs of my machine.

mobo: STRIKER II EXTREME
cpu : Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (Kentsfield) (core stepping G0)
PSU: OCZ GameXStream Power Supply (700w version)
Memory: 8GB Crucial DDR3
GPU: NVidia 9800GTX (BFG)
HDD : 1 x Samsung 1spinpoint , 1 x WD Caviar black

I have spent a long time testing ram and cpu with intel burn test and furmark , memtest etc and I tesed the memory to the point where i bought completely new memory (its cheap) and still have the issue.

I have also used two independant PSU hardware testers both of which pass my PSU as being fine.

However every so often (and never when running a diagnostic test) my pc will simply reboot, there is never a BSOD its just like I've hit the reset button. I have replaced all fans in my Antec 900II case and also checked temperatures.

Idle temps are:

CPU temp: 46C (74 under load)
MB temp : 37C
NB temp: 52C
SB temp: 54C
GPU temp: 56C (as low as 42 if ambient is low)

voltages are:

vcore 1.44v
cpu pll 1.52v
cpu vtt 1.42v
NB core 1.32v
SB core 1.48v
DDR3 termination: 0.81v
3.3V 3.29v
5v 4.94v
12v 12.42v
GPU 1.15v

Bug check code on the kernel 41 is 0 which I know means hardware issue. I am scared one day I'll be repartitoning a HDD and it'll just die and i'll loose data so want this fixed. I am at the point where i'm willing to start throwing money at a new seasonic 850w (or corsair) PSU to try and cure this but can't absolutely isolate it down to the PSU especially when two hardware testers say they're ok.

Has anyone got any ideas ?

I've added detail below it is worth noting that upon removing the overclock and running everything at stock the problem happens with the same frequency (some times not for weeks then one or two in a couple of days).

Probably worth adding this for completeness :)

In the spoiler tags is a lot of info :)

Have you checked your hdd is healthy. Try installing OS on a partion on your storage drive and see if the problem still persists.

Reboots without blue screens or errors are generally down to a power issue. Either a faulty supply (which you should now be able to rule out) or a faulty component causing the psu to trip.

Ok so I replaced my OCZ 700watter with a Corsair AX850, and about 2 hours into using the computer the same thing happens (again the corsair is verified good with a hardware tester)..

The issue is I suppose that the reboots are pretty random , there is no 1 event that causes it.. I have just tried removeing my computer from the surge protector and simply pugging it into the wall socket incase that may be the issue, then I will remove my 9800gtx if it still restarts and see if that has issues. after that I fear its the mobo :(

Perhaps i could also run a live linux for a while to see if that has issues, due to space constraints i cannot install another OS right now.

I should point out my PC has NEVER blue screened and NEVER left a crash dump i can analyse, leeding me to beleive it simply looses power momentarily (allthough I may be incorrect)

Next piece of information, I simply left my machine idle and moved the power plug from the surge protector to the main wall socket and I got a reboot so thats now ruled out.

Candidates are now, Motherboard, GFX, CPU and HDD's.

My feeling is it won't be the cpu as it never gets too hot, so that really leaves gfx card motherboard and HDD, so I have an old 9400 lying around i'll fit tonight and see if that eliminates it :(

Very trying.. I'm really hoping its not the motherboard.. moneys tight right now.

I can also unplug one of my storage drives as its just got data on it thats independant and see if its that.

Ok so now I've moved to windows 8 I know this is a bit of a cop out but I have changed something major, so far no reboot.. time will tell.

ok so I replaced my BFG 9800gt with a crappy 9400 card for testing and got no reboots yet, so I've ordered a 560ti to replace the 9800gt, lets hope thats the last of it :(

To see a BSOD I think you have to uncheck this setting. Have you done that?

(It sounds like you know what you're doing, but I figured this was worth mentioning).

Right I've got a Nvidia 560TI now and I thought the issue had gone. But i was happily mining away in skyrim and BAM reboot.

So this leaves the following culprits.

CPU, motherboard and Storage (HDDs).

Right NOW I'm up for some advice, the CPU passes INTEL burn tests and various other things like prime without getting mega hot, I'm just wondering if it could be something else over heating (northbridge).

I should really explain whats going on. It's not BSODing its almost like I've simply pressed the reset button on the case. Entire system resets this is what causes the Error 41 as windows hasn't gone through a shutdown process... odd error to be sure :(

I've had this errror now for a long time and I'm wondering if the mobo has always been suspect :( too late for a refund now.. The next job is to replace things like motherboard and CPU and thats the scary bit.. that aside from mass storage means I'd have replaced my entire computer .. yes its nice but I don't like not finding out whats going on... on the plus side I need a case and I can build another pc :) (I have a case.)

Just to answer Engram turning off auto restart is one of the first things i did But thanks :)

one other thing I was thinking there is a lot of stuff plugged into my wall outlet I have a 6 way surge strip and a two way extension lead in a dual wall socket I don't suppose the actual socket could be at fault could it ? I've also taken the mobo out and can't see any dodgy capacitors .. end of my tether now really :(

I have been experiencing the exact same problems as you, I have done everything you have listed including a complete change of PSU and hard drive.

But still error 41 persists, (although happens a lot less frequently in windows 8 compared to win 7, not sure why)

The only culprits that are left are the MOBO and CPU. It has been ****ing me off for a long time now. Still got warranty left on MOBO untill Jan, so will update u once it has been replaced if it fixed my issue.

Kernel Error 41 is basically a generic error you get the same if you just hit reset, I'm testing a new power cable tonight (yes I'm going that far because I don't want to spend about 500 quid and get the same issue), still my i7 is one step nearer, but as a professional and enthusiast I'm feeling a bit upset I can't solve this one :(

Have you tried running it outside the case, could be a shorting issue with your case, either motherboard shorting or switches shorting/not working correctly.

hyperst whilst i understand that this could be an issue I don't really have the space or an environment that is condusive to breadboard this pc, I have two pre school children than run in and out of my study and would pour juice into it or something :(

I was very very careful when building this machine and did check the standoffs etc. However I did have a bit of a time with the I/O shield of all things, is there anything I should check there ?

Now should really be the time in this thread to fess up to the fact I bought a b-grade motherboard from overclockers .. perhaps there was indeed an issue to it.. its not immediatley apparent because the pc CAN run for weeks and weeks without it happening and its only in the last year I've been running processes that run all the time so the pcs been on all the time.

I'm going to try the following before doing a total tear down and reinstallation (something I do not relish)..

I've now changed the power lead (what the hell) and I'll remove my usb hub and drive just in case that's doing it.

After that its off to live linux and burnin tests then its sytem tear down... this I've had enough really :(

Sounds strange but try unplugging your reset switch from the motherboard? It sounds as if the reset switch "presses itself".

Good call thats real easy with this motherboard, I'm discounting usb hubs and have also bought a new backplate (striker II extreme backplate needs to power a led thingey) the power switch does sound like a good idea.. static build up ? I'll give that a go tomorrow.

Sorry if i don't post for a while but its because it take a while for the issue to happen, but if it gets fixed rest assured I will post to tell people who have taken the time

[edit]

Ok so not the usb hub so now unplugged the reset switch, not sure why I haven't before.

Ok so I removed the power reset switch from the motherboard and it restarted 24 hours later so its not the reset switch as its disconnected. My kids and wife are away today so I'm gonna take everything out cpu everything repaste , mount a new i/o sheild and check all the standoffs to see if i have a short :(
