The time has come once again for me to rebuld my PC as its showing signs of needing a fresh install. I've been a bit lazy and its years since I have done this! I know I know every six months etc but in some ways its a backhanded complement to the kit I bought from OC and also the advise I got last time.

Please comment in case I miss anything:

Save any files I need to keep to external drive/DVD etc. Download latest drivers for everything prior to wiping the HDD.

Install Windows
Chipset drivers
other main drivers (audio, graphic)
Broadband software
Firewall
Anti virus

Logon to WWW, immediately update firewall and anti virus, and run antivirus.
If all clear get everything from windows update site.
Run Anti virus again.

Load everything else and update accordingly.

Ok, what have I missed?

goto www.nliteos.com and build a windows cd with all the current updates built in you can also add sata, gfx and chipset drivers so no need to install after windows install theyare already there.

It will also automate your install and you can remove a lot of the stuff you dont need like MSN explorer and the old messenger 4.7.

Have a good poke around on that site as there are loads of extra you can have setup to install from the same CD things like Avast, Sysgate firewall, firefox and thunderbird as well as a whole host of other things.

One thing, you may want to change the order of installation from
Install Windows
Chipset drivers
other main drivers (audio, graphic)
Broadband software
Firewall
Anti virus

to

Install Windows
Chipset drivers
other main drivers (audio, graphic)
Firewall
Anti virus
Broadband software

Don't forget to back up any programs you use on a regular basis to save you having to download them and or find them, backup your docs and anything else wierd like fonts you have downloaded. The last has caught me out everytime :o

use nlite if you can be bothered, if not, then use it to slipstream sp2 at least!

w/o that, your pc can be at risk as soon as you connect to the internet

I don't see why people dread a rebuild. I like doing mine, as I know I will get a nice performance boost before I fill it with rubbish in a few months time.

It's not like it's a difficult process either.

when you make an unattended disc, it takes about 30 mins tops to re-install with all settings in tact
