The dreaded Red X

Not to worry, I appreciate your efforts, Thanks. Thanks to everyone else too.

If anyone else has any ideas please let me know.

Very strange then.... I know there was a nod problem late last year that done exactly that.
The fact that its not rendering would indicate that:

a) Images are being blocked from downloading altogether. In which case it could down to the the AV/Firewall/Router/Permissions or something- Which you've already ruled out.
b) Something is conflicting with opening the images. - You could try saving the image, to somewhere like your desktop and see if you can open it. With your web-browser and with the default image application (Which is the default image handler?). You could also try safemode and see if it was a rogue process that's interfering.

do you have more than one machine in the house? try it on that
i've never used adaware 2007 or webroot whatever, so can't rule them out..

try creating a new windows user account and using that.

There isnt an option to save the image, its greyed out. Default image handler is windows picture and fax viewer (if i understand you correctly)

I have just uninstalled Ad aware 2007 and spy sweeper but still hasnt worked.

I created a new user account and tried but that didnt work either.

No, not installed dreamweaver.

I just noticed that tim80bwi's sig is displayed as a red x also.

I don't even get an image :(
Show source shows 'http://www.tim-slater.com/pics/signature.jpg' but it times out for me :(

Long shot but have you tried opera?

Try altering Spy Sweeper's configuration screen to disable "Host File Shield" protection.
Edit: if you uninstalled it did you reboot? and did you try safemode or viewing a local image in the browser?

Also have a look and edit the hosts file in the C:\Windows\System32 folder and remove all the entries BACK IT UP FIRST!!! just in case ;)

Tried Opera and didnt work

Tried disabling host file shield in SS and didnt work, I did reboot after uninstall. I opened a random pic with IE and it opened if thats what im meant to do?

What do I do when im in safemode?

Cant find Hosts file in C:\Windows\System32

Hosts file:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\etc\HOSTS

Safe mode was just to try and open a page that's been giving you any problems. That way you could whittle it down to something running in the background causing the problem.

Can you view a local image in IE/Firefox?
i.e., just drag an image from your desktop into the firefox window.

Dont know if you have the time and patience to do this but you could try a linux live cd (ubuntu) to see if it works under that.

Maybe also look at changing you DNS settings to see if that helps.
Tried a public proxy in FireFox etc? Loads around to try.
Tried uninstalling all possible apps you think could cause an issue?
Tried disabling Windows firewall?
Got a friend with a laptop or pda that can try the connection?
Tried finding somewhere else to shop online?

Ok now this I dont undestand. The sites that Ive had trouble with appear to be working fine. All pictures displaying correctly for no apparent reason. Cant understand it but very pleased all the same. A big thankyou to all who offered me advice, it was much appreciated.
