MMO's are a cash cow for developers - they won't just release it and forget about it - they'll follow it up with expansions to keep people playing. Look at WoW, it's been going for over 8 years now. Releasing single player games set in the same world is counterproductive.
Well The Elder Scrolls Online will be a PC only game made my Zenimax and the numbered titles will continue being made by Bethesda Softworks and will be available for consoles which hold most of the market. Considering the MMO is set 1000 years in the past they can both happily co-exist. Just like the Starwars MMO and over Starwars games.
MMO's are normal RPG's are different enough to want both. I for one will be playing ESO and TESVI
P.s They were working on TESO and Skyrim at the same time!
