The EU are now planning to fine car makers if they build cars that produce over 130 grams per kilometre.

What worries me is BMW are very concerned about this move. I think it was Fox who posted recently some quite incredible CO2 figures produced by their modern engines. Surely if they are concerned thelevels of reduction are going to be very hard to meet.

The total emitted by all the cars in a manufacturers range has to be less than 130g/km, not individual cars.

It's a complete waste of time and money of course, but we can't expect anything less from a combination of the EU and hippie-think...

Things like this wind me up, cars have a very small effect world wide on CO2 yet they target them the most as its the easiet form to cash in on. These "fines" will simply be passed on to us in the form of more expensive cars and any reduction will result in a unmeasurable drop in co2 world wide.

They should be targeting power stations, for example Drax in England this one power station emits the same co2 as 25% of every vechicle in the country (that inclues public transport). It used to burn eco friendly fuel which cut its co2 emissions however it cost the company too much and they reverted to normal fuel which increased the co2 output but also there profits. These are the companies that should be given aid in the form of tax breaks not fines which will always be passed onto us the consumer.

So let me get this straight. Ford, Vauxhuall, Peugeot etc can make say a million cars a year doing on average 16000Km a year at 130g/km and it's OK. Ferrari on the other hand make 6000 cars a year which probably average less than 3000km a year each yet in the eyes of the EU they're killing the planet.....

Nice logic boys.

People and animals produce CO2, should we have a cull? Complete nonsense. Just like the lightbulb issue. However, nobody suggests cleaning up or filtering coal-fired plants...anything that targets industry\corporations is bad

"Carbon footprints" are one of the biggest farces in all history.

Was funny as I was watching early morning American "CBS" news on BBC last night and the yanks are putting a bill through to increase their fuel efficiency by 40% to "reduce their dependence on foreign oil". The current standard over there is a car of 20-25mpg. Then they had a clip of a car dealer saying "unfortunately it is going to cost people much more for a car of the future." :D D'ya think he is oblivious to European and Jap cars that have been offering that MPG for almost 2 decades?

Not going to happen. The Germans are against it and they (despite what you might read in the Mail) bankroll the EU. Money talks, as they say.

Its a bit stupid really when you think that cars produce about 10% of CO2 emitions in this country, so what its this going to acheive, a drop to 9%? probably not even that.
More focus should be put on coal burning power stations, how ridiculous that we still burn coal to make electricity
