The end to Fireman Sam?

We pay these people to save our lives from fire. I don't want to roll the dice with a fireperson. I want a fireman. And as an indirect employer i don't want firemen to work with firepersons.

I am waiting for the time we stop using the word woman as it has man in it.

Why can't people just accept that man = male and female, it's the wo that separates us :p:D:D

First off the OP didn't mention anything about preferential treatment for BAME or female applicants, just encouraging more applicants, which is a good thing as this is one area along with the police where mirroring the community demography can really help with engagement.

On another note is there a particular reason why a person from and ethnic minority might struggle to do the job? I presume they all pass the same fitness tests and what not.

I'm not saying they would struggle, I'm saying if there are 2 candidates for the job, one more suitable than the other, then hiring the less suitable one based on the colour of their skin or gender is blatant racism, regardless of what skin colour or gender they are. Anyone who can't see that is either stupid or lying to themselves.

I'm all for encouraging under-represented groups to apply, but the hiring decision should be based on ability to do the job above all else

You're arguing against a point that nobody has made, the original post was about increasing applications not about increasing representation. The two go hand in hand but I agree with you, I support greater diversity but I support that by removing barriers to entry and increasing awareness, not through some kind of Rooney Rule system that would see applicants from minority or under-represented backgrounds receiving special treatment.

The best way to put it is like this, if you have a job where you have 10 applications, 9 from white British men, and 1 from other demographies I would focus on finding a way to increase the 1, not reduce the 9. That way you also increase the overall pool and therefore your chances of finding a truly exceptional candidate regardless of race, gender, or background. If you can achieve that then provided there is no institutional racism the diversity issue should tackle itself.

This stuff is so daft, why do we need to 'encourage' minorities or women to join? Anyone can join as it is, do you really care who is pulling you out of a fire or saving your building? I would rather someone passionate about the job and helping people were on the roster than someone that has had to be actively encouraged.

This, I don't care what they look like if they can do the job, simple as that.

Why are there not more calls for men to go into nursing or animal welfare? The reason is because nothing is stopping them, it's just most men don't gravitate to that work as much as women. I don't see that as a problem, why should it be a problem in any other line of work? I am completely against discrimination, but we have laws against that. The laws are all we need.

I blame the EU. Postman Pat in Germany is called Postbote Pat, which means Post Office Pat. We shouldn't have ignored the early signs.

Lets start a movement to get more men into Midwifery
