In theory yes, but there are far bigger problems than that. We need a lot of new batsmen and simply don't have them. The captain impacts the fielding and bowling tactics far more than other batsmen, and we've been far worse with the bat than the ball this series. So much for a late night! Do we need a new captain?
Tend to agree with that. Our openers have been poor for a while now, even against weaker bowling attacks like Sri Lanka. So disappointed we weren't more up for it like Aus were.In theory yes, but there are far bigger problems than that. We need a lot of new batsmen and simply don't have them. If we had a solid batting line up and were getting thumped anyway, then I'd agree that Root needs changing - he's at best an average captain. But there's no captain in the world who would make this batting line up work.
In the midst of these batting lows, Joe Root has gone ahead and amassed 1708 runs, the third-highest ever by a batter in a calendar year. His aggregate is 802 runs more than the next-highest in 2021 - Rohit Sharma's 906 - and 1178 more than the next-best from his own team: Rory Burns' 530. Never before in Test history has there been such a wide gap between the top two run-scorers for the year, whether for the same team or overall among all teams.
