First report

A woman has been raped by several men outside a church after leaving a nightclub in Surrey, police have said.

The woman, in her 20s, was followed after leaving Labyrinth Epsom nightclub and attacked between 02:00 BST and 04:00 on Saturday.

The attack is believed to have occurred outside Epsom Methodist Church in Ashley Road, Epsom.

Next day:

Pitchforks appear

Protesters took to the streets on Wednesday evening demanding descriptions of the suspects, after police said they did not have "sufficient information" to give descriptions, and riot police were deployed.

Surrey PCC Lisa Townsend said those responsible for disorder on Monday night, including throwing missiles at police officers and targeting hotels and homes, should expect to face "the full force of the law".

She said some of those involved were not local and blamed misinformation, including false claims that asylum seekers were being housed at locations targeted during the disorder.

Police respond

Case closed

Surrey Police said following its "extensive" investigation into the incident, which sparked protest and public disorder in the town, they now believe the woman concerned "sustained an accidental head injury" following a night out and made "a confused report".

I thought this was a good example of why sometimes the desire to immediately know a suspects description isn't always helpful.
