OK.. recently moved into a new house and im sharing with 5 other people..

Now we all have PC's .. and there are 2 Wiis and 2 Xbox 360s in the house..

Basically some of the flatmates seem to love using bit torrent which obviously kills the internet for the gamers such as myself.

now is there a way to throttle the bit torrent on the router? (i cant go tampering with there laptops.. *yet :) ) I have tried filtering the ports.. but i dont know what ports there clint could be using and unless i block port 80 it seems to be just as bad. I have tried MAC filtering which works a treat but obviously means no internet for that user.. so dosnt really solve the issue..

How have others dealt with this situation...

Get some rubbishy old pc with 2 NICs (486 would do) and install some linux router distribution on it.

IPCop and PFSense both have traffic shaping built in.

Hi

The way I dealt with it is to talk to them explain that the net is for everyone in the house to use and if they can run the torrents overnight when everyone is sleeping.

If that does not work then I did just disconnect them from the router as had given them warning saying it was unfair on other people in the house that want to game or stream video and radio.

Listen to this man! He speaks the truth.
If you can't be bothered with Linux you can achive the same results with windows. There is a program out there that has a really nice GUI and has advanced traffic shaping options. I can't think for the life of me what its called though.
At any rate this method will certainly get things sorted :)
