The Falklands thread

I think I just threw up :(

All this talk of us having a submarine carrying Trident nuclear missiles is laughable. Someone might want to tell Argentina that a Royal Navy Vanguard submarine can be sitting just off the S Coast of England and still hit Argentina!!

In all fairness if the islands were actually taken we have no way to get them back. We have no carriers.

I'm still confused why some people seem to think we would need carriers for this operation, they have no real airforce, most of what's left would be taken out in the initial fight, so we wouldn't need to fight for air superiority, iillustrious with it's helicopters would do the trick.

However it's a pointless scenario to play out, the odds of them taking the island this time is so low it's hardly worthy of serious consideration.

I dont know why it's being discussed. It happens every 5 years. 5th year anniversary of Falklands, ARGENTINA IS COMING! 10th anniversary of Falklands, ARGENTINA IS COMING. 15th....

I really wish Cameron had the stones to put them in their place,

Tell them outright and in a very public way if they dare touch the falklands he'll kick their argy asses into teh middle of next week

I was just thinking the same thing, they took them last time because no-one was there to stop them, it's completely different now. In my mind, all they want is for the UK to say ok you can have them or we'll share, not start a war or try to invade the islands again. Likewise the UK aren't about to start a war either, it's all just pure silliness.

Slightly off topic. Has anyone started drilling for oil round there yet?

There's 3 or 4 companies drilling down there at the moment. 1 has already found significant quantities of oil.

So much so that an American firm is now interested in buying out Rockhopper, and has already sent its own drilling rig there to find more.

And as a nation would we gain from this, through tax or such like?

yes, wed get a fair bit of tax.
the falkland islanders will get allot of extra cash expect a large amount of infostructure building such as hospitals, deep ports etc.
allso the falklands defense force will get some nice new toys.

also the landmine clearance will increase ten fold as land has to be found to build storage depoys etc

My understanding is that the Falkland Islander's will be very very rich and will pay the UK to provide their defence forces.

I was just thinking of moving there the other day as it happens. :)

Won't they have to pay some form of corporation tax or something with it being sort of british soil?
