The Falklands thread

It would be a serious situation if a Phalanx went off, as in the ship within 10 seconds of being hit.

It's my understanding the ones fitted to the Type 45 have been upgraded to the latest revision.

Let's be honest here, most people think Phalanx is the badass answer to everything because of the scene in Under Siege. :p

As the current situation, it's never in a million years going to go as far as an armed conflict. Both sides know Argentina wouldn't stand a chance. So it's all playing politics and PR, painting us as colonialist yobs (which a few of the "come and have a go if you think you're hard enough" posts in here do sound like) and generally making more fuss than if we'd mugged their grandmothers.

We just have to stick to our current policy of saying no and trying to educate the idiots that believe the foul smelling by-product of their main export.

Granted it is a part of the political argument, but I think that people here simply enjoy talking about weapons more than anything else.

They're amazing pieces of engineering.

No different to talking about cars, buildings, ships, planes or spacecraft.

Could someone tell me why Argentina think they should have the Falklands?
Is it just because it's near them or is there some other reason?

Country is in a huge mess + they have massive political problems, anniversary of the war is coming up, the island is close to them, some sort of history which disproves our claim or something about them founding the island before Argentina ever existed, oh and the small fact that everyone in power seems to be 100% mad, perhaps they all have BSE.

The best (as in funniest) argument is that the Falklands inhabitants aren't indigenous and therefore don't have a right to self determination ... Just like the Argentines eh?

I personally want to see what a Type 45 destroyer can do on its own lol.

Its a support vessel primarily, its real advantage being to stop swarming jet attacks, which no one really does any more.

But its a good mobile radar facility and multi-purpose vessel at least, still far beyond Argentines efforts, so its all good, however we do quite lack the sizeable force we used to have decades ago.

It would be incredibly embarrassing if it sunk, its practically the only real fighting ship in the UKs operation.
