The Falklands thread

Publicly humilliated over something again. At which point they'll shut up for about 30 years and then start nattering again.

Happy? :p

Like claiming, at a UN conference, that the Argintine intelligence knows the location of a UK nuclear armed submarine?

They didn't really get humilliated over that though, people just rolled their eyes. I'd guess that unless Kirchner does something so bad it ends her political careeer her government probably isn't going to stop going on about it.

Like being defeated in a disastrous war?

But in Argentina they weren't defeated, they were just really unlucky, while the uk were very lucky.

They were unlucky their bombs didn't explode (didn't drop them within correct parameters)

They were unlucky exocet didn't hit carriers (didn't identify targets/Uk countermeasures worked)

While the UK were lucky to hit the Belgrano (would've missed if we'd not been on target)

Lucky that we had better aircraft, with better weapons and pilots....etc

The Argentinians don't really want to accept they were well beat.

Luckily the Argentine government (so far) hasn't threatened any military action. Their military hasn't had any real upgrades since the war and ours is advanced. That would be a futile waste of life.

The Argentines were just unlucky that the British were better trained and a more professionally force.

Or something.

They were well and truely embarrassed. The US Naval Command said that the UK counter-invasion was militarily impossible, the Argentines had superior numbers, superior air support, superior logistical support and also had material and military support from Peru and Libya....The UK had a cobbled together task force and limited logistical support......what made it even more embarressing for the Argentines wasn't that the UK accomplished that military impossibility, but they achieved it relatively easily and quickly.

The Argentines should be thanking the UK, without that defeat the military junta would not have collapsed and therefore ushered democracy into Argentina.

According to Janes, the Type 45 Destroyer Dauntless could effectively engage and potentially defeat the entire Argentine Air Force on its own.....

Also the french and the americans sold them Exocet missiles... scumbags!

The french stopped supplying them when the war started and made the ones destined for their allies circle the atlantic. America don't make or sell exocet.

America didnt sell directly... but maybe your right... maybe am... am too harsh... But still the french sent their advisors to Argentina... not for a peace process

The Americans put an Arms embargo on them, so did the EEC.......Peru tried to supply more Exocets but they were stopped by the US along with French and British intelligence. People don't seem to appreciate just how much support the US did give or the help that we received from other countries such as France and Chile, despite the fact that a French support team also helped the Argentines with their Exocets early in the conflict.

Yea, it can do something daft like launch 7 anti air missiles every 8 seconds or someting like that. And the AA system it carries is the only ship bourne AA missile that can, and has, intercepted other missiles in actual combat.
The Type 45 is the most advanced AA destroyer ever built. Pity she has next to no anti-ship or ground attack capability. But then that is what our submarines and Tornado/Typhoons are for.

The Americans have never sold Exocet missiles. The french stop selling them, delayed those already en-route and gave us information on how they operate so we can better counter them.

The USA was officially neutral but gave behind the scenes support, the French also have dismputed over-seas territories so it will always be in their intrest to support the UK and the islanders.

From what I've heard from people who have recently been out to Argentina, the press are blowing this completely out of proportion and the general Argentinians don't give two hoots about the Falklands.

If this was a real issue I feel the government would be issuing a travelling warning...
