The Falklands thread

Sorry mate, at the time of the FW1, we had a much larger Navy (Aircraft carriers even, with aircraft:eek:)

I believe the Sheffield was state of the art and had the then new Sea Wolf defense system, which didn't work very well did it?

And now we have some of the best aircraft in the world, one of the most advanced destroyers ever made (which is on it's way over), and the most advanced submarine in the world.

Large numbers isn't everything you know.

Yea I hope youre right! Its just that Im mad that they really went to town on cutting back. Do we have any good defence against those stupid Exocets? Do our warships have those Gatling-type cannons on them like the US has? (Sorry Im not too cued up on Naval stuff!)

Type 45 destroyers have PAAMS missiles which can shoot down incoming missiles and aircraft. It protects not just itself, but any other ship in the fleet.

So yes, we have a defence against exocets.

Are you trying to break the irony meter?

It makes no difference if it was 6 months or 6 years really, unless you are about to argue that nobody who wasn't at least 18 years old in 1982 is entitled to have a view on what happened.

How old were you?

old enough to be called up

you really have no idea

Iran/Venezuela/North Korea are all in bed together, and understandably so. Ahmadinejad was just visiting with Chavez a few weeks ago. Each know the US is looking for any excuse to attack them, so they work together to keep the US second-guessing and not focusing on just one of them. Things are heating-up on Iran so Venezuela makes these threats (not at the US, but a war involving UK/Argentina/Venezuela would be of concern to the US) and pretty soon NK will probably do something like shell another SK island or test another nuke. They each take it in turn to take the heat, although Iran is the "senior partner" here I guess.

World War III is just around the corner, looks like the 2012 phenomenon may come true.

Syria killing their own people backed by Russia and China, how long will this carry on?

Israel/USA/UK war mongering with IRAN over Nuclear weapons.

And Argentina being backed up by Venezuela over the Falklands and "Dallas/Dynasty" style Oil resources.

But lets have a laugh, that Type 45 Destroyer - got enough firepower to flatten their airforces while on the ground let alone when they take off.

Bet theirs a British Nuclear attack submarine with enough tomahawks to wipe out military targets of both Venezuela and Argentina.

I expect you all to join the territorials so that you can have the pleasure of being horribly burned while defending a load of sheep and some inbreds.

We had the Falklands islands before argentina even existed as an independant country. The falkland islanders are british. They have no legitimate claim.

The Type 45 and Eurofighters could take on the entire Argentine and Venezuelan airforce.

Fair bit of truth spoken there.

And were you?

No, you are right, I don't.

Why not furnish us with your obviously superior view? What really happened then?
edit: yes, that was what I meant to say
sorry I'm not going to do a search for the various documentaries and news reports that have been done over the years, I'll leave that to you.

you will be shocked.

edit2: here's a start, the resources we had to commit even surprises me,

Do you have actual arguments to make, or are you just going to try and shame people for not being military? And you accuse others of looking down...
