The Falklands thread

Pretty sure that's not a guarantee!

As a defence utility its almost unmatched, it can track incoming ordinance from thousands of miles away and it's missiles can lock on to a ballistic golf ball. The thing could destroy all of the Argies airforce at the press of one button.

I'd say it's all set, especially when you add a stealth sub into the mix.

We need to send one to the Ryder Cup!

The type 45's search range caps out at about 400km, which while still awesome is a far cry from thousands of miles.

It also doesn't carry enough missiles to destroy the argentine air force, even presuming a 1-hit kill no misses and not having to use any missiles to intercept any enemy missiles it would still run out before killing all the combat craft.

Of course rumour mill has half the argentine air force grounded and unflyable but you can never take too many chances.

Yeah I doubt the Argies would be able to put up more than about 20 airworthy planes.

But...the 400km range is only if the planes decide to play nice and fly at high altitude, and they weren't even stupid enough to do that last time. If they fly low level, the range is very much limited by the horizon, albeit SAMPSON is mounted higher than in comparable ships to extend the horizon they can operate out to.

Why cant we invade venezuala?

They have lots of oil and hardly any infrastructure like Iraq..

I guess we cant use the excuse of a violent dictator like Saddam, but it would be quite cool anyway.

Their petrol is so cheap.

Not to mention the dust and sand filters we've bought for all the vehicles engines. Better to invade somewhere else in the Middle East, get our money's worth out of them!

I dont know..theirs obviously that much dust on books containing how to make lawful claims to islands that have nothing to do with you, we might still need them.

The backing the south american countries are giving Argentina is untested so far. They all say they support Argentina, and they all (but one) closed their ports to ships flying the Falklands flag. But none have joined in the boycott of *all* British ships, and only Venezuela has mentioned military support.

Argentina is taking quite the expansionist stance. Claiming some areas currently under Chilean and Uruguayan control. And these are supposed to be allies.

Our biggest supporter in this will always be France, as they have their own Overseas Territories to worry about. The USA will probably speak out against any actions but provide support in some way, as for them it is best to be seen to be friendly with SA without letting them get too strong.

Argentina's biggest threat right now is looking silly and childish. Anyone looking at the Type 45 will see it has very little offensive capabilities, in fact in this respect its a downgrade from the Type 42 it is replacing that has anti-ship missiles.
The claims that they have intelligence on the location of a Vanguard SSBN in the area, again, made them look silly. It is a stealth ship, whose location is a state secret and its weapons have a 7000 range anyway.
The economic blockade on the islands isn't in the news much, but there are concerns about the way they are doing it. Mainly with the overfishing leading to severely depeleated stocks.

What a refreshing post from the last page of dross :p

Further to that, Chavez does have some toys but his ability to project that and quickly repalce that is limited. Chavez's conflict with the US backed Columbia would leave him too exposed if he started playing games thousands of miles away.

I can't see (personally) Brazil getting involved, it has so much more to gain by being more 'liberal' on the world stage. The rest of SA is insignificant, militarily.

There's an increasing voice inside Argentina of those who don't agree with the view of the government, they see it as a ploy to detract from their dire financial state. I only hope this view gains strength and allows this to blow over without incident.

It was probably in here somewhere but did anyone here that muppet Sean Penn saying the Argie's should get the islands?

Seriously? And he's an "ambassador" for the UN? They must give this job to anyone!

He also has a second home in Hawaii. How hypocritical is that!

I bet Sean Penn thought he was Mr Cool wading into this and declaring his support for the Argies.

Now though, I think he probably feels like a total tool, well I hope so at least!

What a moron.

If we weren't in so much financial bother I'd suggest invading Argentina itself. We have a proud colonialist history after all.
