The Falklands thread

I fully support the Falkland Islander's right to stay British, and very much respect our Armed Forces for all they did to repel the Argentinian invasion....

... however I did laugh very loudly at that advert. It is rather clever :o

I can't quite see how its clever in the slightest. Its completely missing any relevance to the olympics and if they wanted to train on Argentinian soil then I can think of a few places nearer to home. It makes no sense on any level other than to try and provoke a reaction from us.

Its just a little sad really. I didn't think that countries were quite so petty and small minded when it came to things like this.

Thanks lads, just doing what anyone else would have done. I don't feel like I have done anything special.

It was very special. Thank you!

I don't mean to belittle our current troops over in the Middle East, but I think most people find it hard to understand what they're really doing over there. The Falklands was different. The job was clear and justified. We were all immensely proud of what you guys did. Probably the last time Great Britain was truly Great, unfortunately :(

The recent programs about the Falklands gave one snippet of info that was generally overlooked. iirc, it was the third program in the series, where the commentator was saying that the British Govt had been trying to force the Falkland islanders to join Argentina. Combine that with Thatcher's foreign spokesman saying "Britain had no interest in the Falklands" and you can see that if the Falklanders themselves had not been so determined to stay British and the Argies had not invaded then it would have been Argentinian today.

and yet more argentinian idiocy.

Ambassador Alicia Castro told Sky's Dermot Murnaghan there had been a conflict over the islands for decades, and that it should be sorted out internationally.

But she insisted that there was nothing wrong with her government's Olympic advertisement.

She said: "Malvinas are Argentinian. I mean, the islands belong to Argentina, they are in our continental shelf so there's nothing wrong with an athlete training there.

"I don't really want to go into a small discussion, I would like to go into a broader discussion and the discussion is why can't we sit and talk?

"The international community is calling for a settlement of this conflict in a peaceful and permanent solution."

I don't understand how the Argentinians have ANY kind of claim. Firstly the islanders all want to be british. Secondly, the Falklands Islands have never at any point been part of Argentina.

Where exactly does their claim stem from? "Well the island is part of our continental shelf"? SO WHAT. Mexico is part of the USA's continental shelf and you don't see them trying to annex it.

Hahaha argentina have stooped so low now they are even trolling:p

Pretty pathetic attempt if you ask me, just seems petty.

The IOC should ban them from this years games to be honest. Using the Olympics as a political point is in clear violation of the rules.

I find it hard to get upset by that advert. All I hear whenever Argentina says anything about the Falkland Islands is the sound of a two year old throwing a tantrum. Just let them get it out of their systems and move on.

All this rhetoric is about proping up a failing and incompetent President in Argentina, they talk about rights and international calls to settle the dispute, yet the rights reside entirely with the Falklanders themselves and the only country in dispute is Argentina.

The British do not want to have dialogue over the future of the Falklands because it isn't necessary to.......The simple fact is that the Falkland Islanders have an internationally recognised right to self determination which is supported by the British, and they determine to remain as they are, a self governing overseas territory of the UK, and that is that. Argentina are the only country who are trying to remove those rights and impose their political will, it is Argentina who are seeking to contravene the human rights of the Falkland Islanders, no-one else.

Argentina just got to get used to the fact that they have no claim, that resides entirely with those who live and are born on the Falklands

People have been trying to explain that to them for aaaages though and they're still nattering on about it. I doubt they're going to stop until they get publicly humilliated over something. I was kind of hoping that would the the IOC telling them to wise up and stop dragging the olympics into things but the IOC don't appear to care.

I'm wondering if their team will get booed at the opening ceremony as a result of the advert. Probably not but wouldn't surprise me if they did.
