The Falklands thread

He really is a cutey isn't he ?

cos shooting nuclear missiles in defence of a crappy island obliterating south America making it uninhabitable for 100s of years really is the best answer you have?

****ing muppets in this thread want another falklands war it seems, cos afghan went oh so well

I think you have me confused with someone else. I never said anything like that. It seems your knowledge of internet forums equals your knowledge of the operational readiness of the Argentine military after decades of chronic underfunding.

Nuclear powered, almost certainly. Probably more than just one.

Not a Vanguard though. South America is a no-go for nuclear weapons and the UK signed up to that.

Should have said that of course ;). Probably just happen to have an astute class doing some 'sea trials' around there.

There are also 3 books written by John Birmingham about exactly the same thing. I loved reading them.

I always wondered what it would have been like to transport a Second World War Battleship back 200 years to something like the Battle of Trafalgar or a Challenger 2* back to an old battle, say Waterloo, or even older, civil war/Roman battle...

*Although after the incident with the Challenger 2 in Iraq and the incident in Korea during the Korean war I can guess what would happen..!

we cant defend the falklands anyway, the tories mothballed all the harriers and carriers, without air superiority it would be even more of a blood bath than last time, the argentines do have carriers and can fly from the mainland anyway, we are screwed and they know it

pretty sure Argentina does not have carriers

Amazing stuff:

Wikipedia said:
In one encounter within the urban area a Challenger 2 came under attack from irregular forces with machine guns and rocket propelled grenades. The driver's sight was damaged and while attempting to back away under the commander's directions, the other sights were damaged and the tank threw its tracks entering a ditch. It was hit directly by fourteen rocket propelled grenades from close range and a MILAN anti-tank missile.[11] The crew survived remaining safe within the tank until the tank was recovered for repairs, the worst damage being to the sighting system. It was back in operation six hours later after repairs. One Challenger 2 operating near Basra survived being hit by 70 RPGs in another incident.[12]

exactly, the real question is how do we get them onto the island? DPD or Royal Mail, ParcelMonkey will only loose them and knowing the mod, they'll buy the wrong insurance.

Just don't write fragile on the box and it will be fine.

What incident in Korea and Iraq?

Dunno about Korea but during the Iraq invasion a Challenger II took something like 19 rocket hits with no loss of crew and the damage was repairable.

Yep

And

On the retreat the tanks took to mowing each other down with machine gun fire to get move the Chinese swarming all over them. Apparently they were covered in blood and entrails when they finally got through...

Or more seriously:

Escorted by

With http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/The-Fleet/Submarines/Fleet-Submarines/Astute-Class/HMS-Astute just making sure Argentinian navy haven't decided to play target practice!

Think that would sort it out. Although when the Challengers get there they'll probably just get stuck in the mud and not move, but the thought is there!:D

well we can always use them to heard sheep and clear the anti=personnel landmines that the argies left last time, though not at the same time or we may have to deal with a greater threat than the who Argentinian armed forces; PETA

If they had them on the Islands in 1982 in large numbers, there would have likely been a different out come. They may be old if not comical, but they are still dangerous and would have needed dealing with.

I don't know the slower spitfire may be easier to hit with the old Blowpipe, which required the operator to have 3 hands and be a leading member of mensa to hit anything.
can you imagine what the fight would be like in its current climate, the british army has come on leaps and bounds since 1982. Amount of firepower per squad alone has drastically increased

Wind you neck in.

like anything is going to happen anyway!
Argentina is a basketcase country with rampant inflation, a destroyed economy and less military than it had in 1982 - the wouldn't last a week in a fight.
they are mouthing off to hide their political/economic mess thats all.

Pretty much this. Just in a kinder wording!
