The Falklands thread

Typhoon is multi-role and is more than capable of hitting ground targets. We also have UAVs designed with a ground attack focus in mind.

Ground-attack UAVs would be cool...but isnt the Typhoon just too fragile for close-air support? It would get reamed by the bad guys AA fire.

A-10, SU-25 type jets are built to take a hammering! But yea the UAVs should fill the gap!

I don't know what AA the Argentines use, but they would never get it on the island on the first place. If it is even properly maintained and the have ammunition for it.

As many others have said, as Argentina was an overseas colony of the Spanish Empire displacing the indigenous inhabitants I really can't take their bitching about colonialism even remotely seriously.

Seem to me much like when the Spanish arrived in Argentina they acquired the land and refused to acknowledge the rights of any indigenous population then would like to do the same with the Falkland Islands. Except this time the indigenous population have bigger guns.... :)

They tried the same thing in the 70s (? I think) with islands in the Beagle channel that belonged to Chili.

Nothing the RAF own can take ground fire. There's armoured sheets added to tactical transport aircraft/helicopters to provide some armour but nothing on any fast jets we've ever owned. The best protected aircraft the MOD own is the Apache.

As for the A-10 it's too limited in it's role to be a RAF aircraft, which have to be multi-role by virtue of the fact we don't have enough planes to be able to do separate jobs with them.

Do wish we had a decent compliment of A-10s none the less - nothing else puts the fear of god into ground troops like a strafing run from A-10s without them even having to land a shot on target.

honestly we are ok as we do have apache's and illustrious till 2014 and then hms ocean. A-10's are nice but are much of a one shot wonder especially when the typhoon can do everything else apart from the heavy strafing run's.

to be fair most of the crashes are mainly from hermes and they are a lot cheaper to crash than a proper aircraft. crash landing typhoon that was written off cost us about 125million.

Problem solved ...

We install speakers all over the islands.
Should they be invaded, a very loud, argentinian accent shouts ... "Enemy AC-130 above!"

I doubt another Falklands conflict would see Britain on its own against Argentina if they were stupid enough to invade again. The world has changed a lot since then and I think a show of aggression like that would gain a lot more support for the UK's position.

The Argentinians military is in a much more sorry state than the Uk.
