Is this basically universal to everyone regardless of their rigs power? This basically occurs when you move from one area to another and the game 'quickly' loads it up and you get a small hiccup.

This is not to be confused with the 'micro stuttering' that some people are getting, because i can get solid 60fps when i walk and its all smooth but the area load is obvious because its the only dip.

Its not a major problem, it just ruins the immersion a bit. I have a feeling its hard wired into the engine, because Oblivion definitely had it as well.

My specs are, a e6300 @ 3ghz, 4gb ram and a 260.

Sorry if there are a gazillion fallout performance threads, they dont seem to cover the above.

I had this 'issue'with Oblivion but I have not experienced this issue with Fallout 3 and I have been walking around the landscape a lot

I don't know what's causing it, it is obviously not performance related as your system should run flawlessly, that makes me think it might be related to the game itself and it will always stutter a little no matter how fast you hardware is.

I don't see how you could avoid a small amount of hitching when loading a new area in a seemless world. Is that possible? I guess it is if you have a free core and enough bus bandwidth to load the data from the HD to memory without interfering with normal game engine processing. Even then you'd have to be smart about loading the data ahead of time.

Normally on my machine there is always stuttering with any sort of HD access. I'd just assumed that was normal and unavoidable tho :) I guess if I had more than one HD it might be different?

ok thats cool if its unavoidable, then i can deal with it.

I think it depends how many HDs you've got. I've only got 1, so I get hitching every time an app needs to load something. Not entirely sure how it works. I know there are people who say they can watch a DVD while burning a CD and encoding an AVI all at the same time and with no performance lost.

But I can't :D
