The "fast" lane...

Also could someone clarify what class of vehicles are aloowed in the outside lane, i consistently see hgv type vehicles out in the outside lane, didnt think they were allowed to be there?

I think it's a 3.5ton gvw limit for the fast lane.
 
What the Highway Code says about the "fast" lane...
You should drive in the left-hand lane if the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower moving vehicles it may be safer to remain in the centre or outer lanes until the manoeuvre is completed rather than continually changing lanes. Return to the left-hand lane once you have overtaken all the vehicles or if you are delaying traffic behind you. Slow moving or speed restricted vehicles should always remain in the left-hand lane of the carriageway unless overtaking. You MUST NOT drive on the hard shoulder except in an emergency or if directed to do so by signs.

Undertaking me in my HGV could result in a trip to the undertakers!

Don't blame me, it's not my fault I have massive blind spots and the undertaking driver is ,obviously, a cretin. :rolleyes:

Happens to me all the time.... :(

When I'm in my car, well, its BMW lane only, as I'm banned from said lane in my HGV. :p ;)

Your not looking at HGV's, there 7.5 ton vans (able to do 70mph) dinky toys, us truckers call them! :p
Anything bigger is breaking the law (with the exception of coaches.)

The right-hand lane of a motorway with three or more lanes MUST NOT be used (except in prescribed circumstances) if you are driving

* any vehicle drawing a trailer
* a goods vehicle with a maximum laden weight over 7.5 tonnes
* a passenger vehicle with a maximum laden weight exceeding 7.5 tonnes constructed or adapted to carry more than eight seated passengers in addition to the driver.

Simply, that makes you a better driver than them.

Driving is all about thinking of those around you, putting your car in as few risky positions as possible and making progress (after all, that's what driving is for right...), hence the simple smooth acceleration past people that are going 2mph slower than you achieves all of these points - As a good driver you should make the decision either to slow to their speed and not overtake or speed up slightly to get past them without affecting others.

Imo, this is exactly the same as not pulling out when a car is fast approuching from behind ... you hold back as you are considering traffic around you - lessening the risk to yourself and avoiding any anger from the fast approuching driver.

I can understand what you're saying about 70mph is the limit and you shouldnt exceed that hence passing people by 2mph is perfectly acceptable. Acceptable yes, good driving no.
 
I'm not saying that those who do it should be given a good driving medal, I'm saying that those of us who speed really have no right to whinge about people doing 70 in the outside lane provided they are actually passing people in the middle lane, no matter how slowly..

We are breaking the law, they are not..

i agree, some people i know get very impatient when their behind someone overtaking at a steady 70, if they cant pul in and dont want to speed what else can they do :p:rolleyes:

if i see someone flying up behind me i get out of their way as soon as i can, i dont need to try and prove anything by staying in the lane annoying them, if they want to speed thats their problem

ive only been driving a few weeks and done 1300 miles since i passed, but i dont think ive annoyed anyone yet on the motorway/dual carriageway :D
 
I agree with Fox's sentiments here - you can't expect them to speed for your convenience! :p

Myself I will make sure I overtake at around a 10mph difference minimum to make it swift. Although one thing I do hate is when I'm behind someone overtaking another car slowly and someone behind me attaches his front bumper to my rear - what does he want me to do? Drive through the car in front!?
