I have had a cosmos s for a while now, some love it, some hate it. Well, I got it originally to water cool, the 360mm grill in the top was too tempting. Cos of a mixture of... everything... it got put on the back burner till now.
As it will be my first mod and watercooled pc, I have decided to start small and change the whole thing.
Most of the stuff is already bought and at the moment I am just waiting on the last few bits to come through the post and will be done.
To start, this should keep me busy:
Alphacool Laing D5 Vario Pump
Alphacool HF D5 top
EK Supreme HF CPU Waterblock (Nickel Plexi)
Hardware Labs Black ICE GT Stealth 360 Radiator
3x Scythe Gentle Typhoon (1850rpm)
EK Multioption Reservoir X2 250 Advanced Reservoir
Masterkleer Hose Pack PVC 15,9/11mm (7/16ID)
Akasa FC. SIX Channel Fan Controller
An armful of EK PSC 7/16 Compression Fittings
A full set of Bitfenix Alchemy prebraided cables
Mayhems Aurora Nebula Blue Coolant
A lot of aggravation of rjkoniell, Twst and bicepo helped me make the parts list so can't complain
The insides of the case on a cosmos are bare aluminium, this will be cut to pieces, painted up black, and to hide the cabling and drive bays it will be fully panelled to shroud them, and then for looking shiny these panels will be coated with carbon fiber vinyl. I started by measuring up the space and throwing what i wanted into google sketchup to see how it looked
I have gone with a complete shrouding of the drive bays and bottom of the case, a cutout area to hold the res, and there will be a panel on the bottom so I can get to the psu and cables should I need it in the future without taking out all of the panelling.
The downside of this is to get the hard drives in I am going to have to hack up the case and put in a drive mount system at 90 degrees for cabling and access, and while I am there I might as well cut a hole for a fillport at the top and get rid of the top fan mesh. I will be marking this tonight and getting out the fun/dangerous powertools tomorrow....
updated 23/02/2012:
The mdf and vinyl arrived today, so got straight to skinning the side panels. Over the last couple of years these have taken a bit of a knock so have minor scratches, but the vinyl film covers it well. This is the 3M DiNoc stuff, very easy to use, easy to stop it bubbling.
As the res will pretty much be locked in place it makes sense to have a fillport, so I have cut the hole in the case top as well as removing the mesh along the top of the case, and I have cut the hole in the main rack at the front to put another HDD rack in at 90 degrees.
This was the point I was lucky to have remembered the goggles when using the multi tool, carbide cutting disks are brittle (I snapped no end of them cos I wasn't careful enough) and these can fly out like shrapnel. This piece hit the goggles right where my right eye was before glancing off and sticking into the rubber outer frame...
goggles: £3. eyeball: £lots. The goggles win in this case.
I also started to work out the redesigned internal panels:
originally the plan was to have the case a) powdercoated or b) professionally sprayed, but as time has gone on and unforseen circumstances I had to settle for the good old cans of spraypaint (it just needs to have a base colour, the frame was cleaned and most will be hidden by outer panels etc)
I had ordered some rubber grommets (most case manufacturers make extras to sell on) so I can get the cable management sorted so I had the fun of cutting out the recesses for these and the bulkhead fittings for the watercooling, turned out ok I think
And finally just putting everything in place with the res to get a rough idea of how it goes together, got to sand a few joins and thinks like that, then carbon vinyl the panels, screw them in properly and then get with building the actual computer and loop...
