After nearly 3 years of exorbitant pricing and scalpers, those people who have very low budgets can finally upgrade.

Seeing a ton of ex mining cards on eBay.

RIP mining and cryptocurrency.

Hope everyone is enjoying their value upgrades.

I’m thrilled to be getting a cheap Z490 rig for a Docker/VM/Plex/Linux server to put in the roof.

Oh no, I don’t buy off eBay unless I have to.

I found a cheap Z490 motherboard here on OC.

The pricing is often cheaper here on OC and people are great at communication.

eBay just seems to have really badly priced hardware that you might get scammed on.
 
Had already started happening with the 3080 TI cards on eBay - There was a **** tonne of them at stupid prices right as a container load landed on the docks many months ago. Lots of scalpers got burned hands from that one.

Listing prices are now about half what they were a few months back with many trying to offload at cost price previously.

It is a joy to behold.

I know what you mean but it depends on if the card was looked after ie proper lowering of voltages and clocks with removal of any dust.

I've got an old RX580 that I got second hand, did some mining on and it's still going strong but yes, you don't know the condition if you buy from eBay.
 
You don't know how the GPU has been looked after, but an ex miner card isn't nesesarily junk as they are on 24 7.
I've anecdotally read it's the hot and cold power cycles that can be worse.. So maybe the fan bearings might not be great for extended periods of power on, for ex mining cards?
 
It has been really good recently.

I've got several pieces of hardware off eBay recently. CPUs, GPUs, mobos and RAM. All performed flawlessly apart from one GPU which died after a week, but I got that dirt cheap, I think I paid a fiver for it.

When I buy hardware from eBay I tend to follow these rules:

  • Make sure the seller has taken time and care to write a satisfactory description about the item and how it's been stored/looked after;
  • Make sure there are lots of high-res pictures of the item from different angles;
  • Make sure the price of the item is in keeping with other similar items;
  • Make sure the seller has lots of good feedback;
  • If you are going to take a risk with an item, make sure you are paying a good amount less than what you would expect to for it.

Many sellers buy GPUs etc with the sole intent of reselling them after they upgrade, so they will look after them for this reason. The two fully-operational GPUs I bought came to me in their original boxes with all original packing. The GPU that died was sent in some random cardboard box stuffed with paper, iirc.

Also remember that eBay is very much tilted in favour of the buyer these days. In many cases they will hold your payment until you confirm you are happy with the item. Yes, this is quite annoying for the seller but it's how things are now.

Must only be sellers with pretty low feedback that have their payment held? I sell a lot on eBay and I've never seen that happen at least since the move away from Paypal to Ebay's own Payments Service

I just checked, these are the reasons it happens, according to eBay:

  • New or infrequent sellers will experience transaction holds while we confirm that their items have been successfully delivered. This helps sellers become established and build a strong selling history on eBay. New sellers typically experience holds for up to 14 days, although sometimes it may be longer
  • Previously restricted or suspended sellers will experience transaction holds for 30 days after the restriction or suspension is lifted, while we confirm that the items have been successfully delivered
  • High priced items or unusual selling patterns may lead to transaction holds for up to 30 days to help us ensure that buyers don't have any issues with the order

I checked on some sites for GPU's from the £175 - £250 range and pretty much nothings changed for 3 months.

Alderlake K and z690 motherboards still more expensive since I picked up my 12600K early in the year.

No real changes in prices in the K series Coffee Lake / z370 / z390 pricing.

I'm not seeing any flood of hardware. :confused:

Mainly applies to GPU's and the retro gaming too.
 
With brand new 3090ti Amp Extremes at £999, and all the mining cards flooding the market, a second hand 3080 must be about £300 now isnt it?

Not quite, the issue is, who is going to sell their 3080 for that low and then spend another £650 for an upgrade to the 4070 *coughs* 4080 12gb.
