I just started playing this with a view to setting a private server up with some mates.
I definitely set private but within 10 mins I had 2 french people laughing and jeering at me and playing really loud Thomas the tank engine music at me. seemingly using mods as could jump really high and we're just spawn killing me continually.

this game has huge potential for me and some mates but if Berks can infest private games I won't bother
yet more reinforcement why I do not play public multiplayer

rant over .. but is there a way around this ?
 
Does it have an ability to add a password to the server?

If so add 1 and give it to the people you wish to allow on.

Never played the game so unsure what options you have on servers
 
I was playing with my kids over Christmas, and I'm sure we'd setup a password protected server. We were never joined by anybody else, so only bothered by the cannibals and their friends in the game.
 
i will go back and give it another go. i really hope i can easily lock it down because it ticks a lot of boxes for when i am in a group with a lot of mates on. most of our coop games are 4 player so if there are 6 of us it does not work.... and i really am not into PvP games (despite playing them on occaison for the benefit of others in the group who are). I must admit though i didnt see an option to password protect however if it is there that should sort me out!.

I will say tho i will never understand the mentality of those who go into games purely with the goal of ruining someones day either by hacking, playing obnoxious music, shouting and throwing insults or deliberately spawn camping or trying to mess with someones game. (they were in the process of blocking up my spawn point to try to stop me even getting out of the crashed plane at the point that i gave up and logged off.... The guys on my server literally managed all of the above in 1 go.

they also had seemingly unlimited grenades and different automatic weapons...... i had.......... the starting axe and no clue what i was doing!.

I remember when we had a Counter strike server that they where all public servers and the only option we can to make it a private server was to add a password to it.

Always get people out there hacking or trying to mess around on other peoples servers.

Not too sure how up to date it is but possible steps below after having a very quick google.

Setting a Server Password
  • Access your control panel and Stop your server.
  • Navigate to Files > Config Files.
  • Open The Forest Server Settings.
  • Enter a password in the Server Password field.
  • Save and Start your server.
 
ahh thanks for that. it never occured to me there may be an out of game way to set up a password. it all seems very odd, i would expect it just to be a matter of doing it in game when you start.

i will check that out for sure tomorrow cheers!.
 
Just had a look - choose Multiplayer and then Host Game. There you can give the server a name, number of people and click the Private checkbox. Create the Lobby, then Invite Friends, and you should be good to go.

that is what i did tho and randoms joined in :(


i did a google and it seems I am not the only one this has happened to. if the password thing above works that is great however if not it seems its possible i need to make my steam profile private according to some posts but that seems excessive just for 1 game

:-( Strange, we played a lot over the Christmas period and never had any problems. I don't think my profile is private. Are you filling the server to the capacity you setup?

no for the simple reason i was hoping to make a long term game which would potentially have up to 7 in but for the most part would be 3 or 4

note this was not a paid dedicated server either it was just a local one made from within the game menu. hopefully i will have a look tomorrow and maybe i just did a boneheaded mistake however googling does seem to show its an issue.
