When I try to perform a full format of a hard disk in the disk management utility I get a useless error message saying that the format did not complete successfully.

What are the possible causes of this error message and how can I potentially fix the problem?
 
Which drive you trying to format? Hopefully not the drive with the OS on!

Could be a faulty drive otherwise?

Can you take the drive out and try formatting it outside the PC?
 
It's a usb hard drive. I'm gonna try using a diagnostic tool. Even though it says formatting failed I can open the drive and copy files to and from it.
