The G.E.C.K - Vault Tec component.

I don't think he's set up for hot air - at least not in the soldering sense ;) :p - but I'm pretty sure he has a desoldering iron with built-in solder sucker. I know because it's his fault I bought one (and very useful it has been too).

Presuming you are using hot air and not just trying to somehow wick and replace with an iron, I'd try giving the entire board some baseline heat first, might take a while with the heat sink on but with big mass like that a lot can soak in and cause difficulty getting big components off (happens with HDMI on consoles for example). Perhaps pop the heatsink off while performing the soldering job.

I have a hot air gun. I tried that too. What was concerning me was that there are several tiny caps on the front side. It just isnt worth it tbh. Itll only end in tears :D

Socket finally arrived.

As did the second lot of thermal glue I bought (other one not arrived) and the CR batteries I needed.

Took it apart and replaced thermal paste.

And then made sure the enormous NVME cooler would fit.

I am about to begin prep on the back side cooler.

Well the double sided tape I use for CNC also has other uses it seems lol.

Clean.

Goop.

And done.

I tell you what I am so lucky. Any larger and it would have covered the screw holes you need access to to take it apart to paste etc. Also, the VRAM is literally *right there* in that square.

Poifect.

Evri bringing the IEC plug later. So I can hopefully finish that today too !

Well that was a badly dished heatsink. Still not perfectly flat but the goop should more than handle the slack - especially for an ancillary heatsink :D

Well it is either that or the MDF is plap. It is never coming off, that's for sure lmao. That is why it is sealed in a bag. Even the sealed tube has been known to turn to rock
I am now waiting on the SSD to arrive. I did not splurge on a 1tb yet, instead grabbing this from poo bay for 12 quid INC.

It's not often I exhibit common sense but yeah, I should do that before spending big on a drive.

Am also making the Bazzite stick now too.

The fan came.

Oddly I realised that the box of coffee that came is around the same dimensions as what I will be making lol.

And a quick video.

Nah, it's not your MDF that isn't flat. Well, it might not be flat but it isn't the reason. You can see the middle and round the edges just haven't touched the sandpaper despite you clearly having rotated the part a couple of times. Even were the surface you're lapping it against dished dipped in the middle all the way from one side to the other (which could give you a dip just in the middle like that if you'd rotated the part), it still doesn't explain the edges so it's definitely that heatsink wasn't flat.

If the coffee box is conveniently the perfect size, it's clearly a sign that you've been chosen to join the motherboard-on-a-cardboad-box club....welcome aboard! :D

Was expecting that Delta to hover by top-end! Been there and retaining all your fingers is definitely an achievement. The blades are normally tough enough to have survived the fall too. Any damage to the tips?

Nope all good thankfully.

I just wish the SSD had come today. I could have been doing far more tinkering. That said it is here tomorrow, so I need to plan how to lay it all out so I can get some air over it for now.

Well, the fins on your heatsink are oriented the right way for your front-to-back airflow. What you need now is shrouds....so I reckon you're about due to get into the 3D printing that'd be perfect for that sort of thing! :D

OK so today did end up giving me something to do. Does it power on? yes. Does the Bazzite USB stick I made work? yes. I forgot you can boot into it to play with before you even have a drive to install it on.

Noice.

It's also quick to set up and remove now. I fitted a DP to HDMI adapter and have a cable in my monitor so I don't need to keep pulling out the PC. So I just plonk it on the desk, switch ports and done.

Looks remarkably like the Pi Zero 2W I have set up just like that. I reckon yours has just a gnat's more power than mine though! :D

She gets rather warm, she does. Heatsink is lovely to warm your hands on lol.

The back cooler also gets nice and warm, which is a good sign. Means it's wicking heat very well.

Hopefully I either have more luck than Hamish, or, Bazzite have worked on the WIFI issue. It's patchy apparently. Hamish tried another USB WIFI adapter but it seemed more OS based. That will be a problem here as nothing is wired. Still, I should be able to get it installed in the very least tomorrow when the drive comes.

Bah. For some reason I incorrectly thought this thing had WIFI of sorts. It does not. So there wasn't an awful lot I could do. I have since ordered a dongle, as wired here is not an option. Fitted the NVME cooler and put it in the board.

And install.

Next up select the drive.

Do note this bit here takes ages.

The install is now done. Sadly you literally need internet straight away before you can get into the OS itself, so that will have to wait until I am back in 10 days or so. I've now measured how everything needs to be to work, and measured the IO panel etc. So I can begin design tomorrow when I get home :)

Yeah, one big flat piece! Anyway, he should be so lucky, they've not managed to deliver mine (from the UK!) in the last two weeks! Some suggestion that tomorrow may be the day...but we'll see.

I know I buck the trend but Evri where I live are excellent. It's just luck based on how honest your delivery person is. We've had a Polish lady for about 3 years and nothing has ever been broken or lost.

The problem is that they pay so little that they attract the wrong type of person and that is why so many parcels are "lost'.

We always (Mum and I) treat her at Christmas.
