Game of the Year - Baldurs Gate 3

So the big winners on the night, Baldurs Gate 3 which picked up 6 awards including the main award - Game of the Year and Alan Wake 2 which picked up 3 awards.

On top of the good things that I've heard about Cocoon, it being recognised with that award means that I really need to take a look at it as its on Gamepass anyway.

Seems like most of the awards went to deserving winners. It's a shame Zelda didn't win one or two, but it was a stacked year TBF.

Edit: It won best action/adventure game.

I had to laugh at the Starfield nomination when they flashed up all those 10/10 scores from the most obscure sites they could find  Well done to Larian studios with a much deserved GOTY win.

No awards for Tears of the Kingdom is crazy. It is one of the best games ever made.

Edit. Nevermind, the above list is not complete for some reason. Tears of the Kingdom won best action adventure game.

Even as a fan of the game, that score card is pure cringe - clearly the marketing department was told to make a page of 10's  The stupid thing is that there's a bunch of good scores in there from places like Forbes, Destructoid, Gamesradar+, Metro, Evening Standard, Washington Post and the various international IGN sites, but you're hard pressed to see them 'cause they're buried in a bunch of gaming blogs. Well done Bethesda *slow clap*.

More importantly, who the heck thought Forza Motorsport deserved a best *anything*..?

Zelda is still more or leas an expansion to breath of the wild, so what you get is voter fatigue - voters prefer to vote for the new thing

Starfield was never going to beat BG3. It was a good concept but it's lacking everywhere. Worst of all the story is boring and the game has no excitement.

If it went up against Skyrim, Skyrim would clean up.

No idea how Forza Motorsport was even nominated for an award never mind actually win one. Its current iteration is an abomination of a title. MS and the devs should be ashamed of themselves given that it is now a shadow of its former self.

"Best Sports/Racing - Forza Motorsport"

Seriously WTF? That must be a fix. It is one of the worst racing games Ive ever played.

The other contenders:

  • EA Sports FC 24 (EA Vancouver/EA Romania/EA Sports)
  • F1 23 (Codemasters/EA Sports)
  • Hot Wheels Unleashed 2: Turbocharged (Milestone)
  • The Crew Motorfest (Ubisoft Ivory Tower/Ubisoft)

Crew motor fest and f1 23 are by far the better games.

Yeah I missed that one, thats what comes of writing the post at 4am after watching almost 4 hours of the awards show :)

That's really under selling TOTK. It uses the same map but it is a different layout. It has a whole underground world the same size as the surface as well as having the sky islands. The mechanics are so much more advanced than Breath of the Wild. It can easily be a 100 hour game if you want to do everything.

Yup, I also think that's an unfair characterisation. The whole map has been redesigned, plus it's nearly twice as big as BotW. It's not just some copy and paste job. The reason why TotK didn't win is twofold : BG3 is a damned good game, and recency bias ( TotK came out in the first half of the year, BG3 was recent enough not to be forgotten. Plus, we've seen what recency bias can do with Alan Wake picking up 3 nominations despite not even registering in the top 100 games played in the month it was launched ).

Considering the slating Forza Motorsport '23 got on here, putting me off buying it for now, I'm shocked it beat these (guessing top one meant to be EA WRC?).

I'm glad I'm not the only masochist who subjected himself to that! Terrible show overall. Giving no time at all to the winners to say a few words, but celebrity presenters get twice as long and Keighley gets to massage Kojima's ego for ages!

Yeah it wasnt a great show at all, especially as some of the awards werent given any time at all, nobody even to pick up the award, was just read off a list rapidfire. I think only about 4 or 5 of the awards actually had anyone come onto the stage and even then they were ushered off the stage after about 3 sentences. Meanwhile "guests" on the show were given ages to chat about there upcoming title. In the end it all felt more like a preview show than an award show.
